The Nintendo Switch is a console that has a massive variety of games, from puzzle games to platformer games, or even horror games, there’s something for everyone on this nifty and versatile little console.

However, whether you’ve spent too much on bubble tea and cookies this week or pay-day hasn’t fallen yet, we don’t all have the budget to spend £40 on a game. Let’s be honest, what’s better than something that’s free?

Here is a list of 7 completely free games available on the Nintendo eShop that we like the most:

  1. Apex Legends

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is an incredibly fun fantasy FPS battle royale game that stormed onto the Nintendo Switch for free in the first half of 2021. The best way I can describe this game is Overwatch mixed with Titanfall and Warzone, with each player being able to pick a ‘hero’ character based on their skill set, unique abilities, and their overall character attributes.

Apex Legends in game shot

Apex Legends is in fact from the Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment, so the mechanics and feel of the game are pretty similar to that of the recent Titanfall series. They have also chucked in many weapons from the Titanfall games, such as the R-301, the Kraber sniper and other types of weapons such as an Arc grenade.

You get thrown onto the Frontier to fight in a 60-player battle to be the last one standing, where all these Titanfall-inspired weapons, along with consumables like shields and med-packs, are scattered around the map for you to loot. All that’s left now is for you to get on Apex, land on the deadly Frontier Island and start beating the rest to get the win!

  1. Pokémon Unite

Pokemon Unite

Pokémon Unite is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game where you, as a Pokémon of your choice, fight against members of the opposite team and (hopefully) win battles in real time to help your character level up, evolve, and learn new attacks.

The game has a lane system that is very similar to most MOBA’s. In Pokémon Unite, your goal is to not only defeat your opponents, but also collect balls of energy called ‘Aeos Energy’ and essentially dunk them through the enemy teams’ hoops.

Once the enemy hoops have been filled with enough Aeos Energy, they will be destroyed, giving your team a huge boost in securing a win. Each team has 5 hoops and to win the game, you have to destroy all of the enemy teams’ hoops whilst also protecting your own.

A good bit of news for those without Nintendo Online is that you do not need the Nintendo Online paid membership to play Pokémon Unite on your Nintendo Switch, even though it is an online game, which is something that all gamers will appreciate. Go put Blastoise in a fancy suit and start winning mountains of Aeos energy for your team now!

  1. Fall Guys

fall guys

A game which has blown up over the last year or so, Fall Guys is a whacky and silly game that is very easy to rage at, but also very fun. In this battle royale game, challenge others solo, duo, or in a squad with your friends as cute and customizable little bean guys with rag-doll physics.

You race other players across obstacle courses while trying to dodge perilous structures, mini games and competitors all in the bid to qualify for the next round and eventually attempt to win a Crown in the last and final round.

The mini games are randomly selected and whilst some are better than others, the game becomes easily addictive; it’s always a fun time playing Fall Guys! What’s more is just like Pokémon Unite, Fall Guys is an online game you do not need the Nintendo Online membership for!

  1. Spellbreak

spellbreak

Anyone that has played Spellbreak, even for a short amount of time, will tell you how clean and cool the graphics and that combined with the unique gameplay mechanics make this game a sensational free option on the Nintendo Switch.

The shrinking storm, the falling out the sky and landing into a map where your aim is to be the last wizard standing, the character build and art style; multiple points make this game slightly resemble Fortnite but swap your grenades for spells and guns for magical wands in this fantasy Battle Royale style game.

Spellbreak Gameplay

You can have lots of fun eliminating the enemy in this game, with a wide range of incredible skills like spraying ice on the floor to turn it to water, which you can then electrify, or shooting fireballs to burn the enemy to smithereens. If you’re a fan of Battle Royales but want something a bit different to play other than Warzone or Fortnite, this is the game for you.

  1. Pac-Man 99

pac man 99

Yes, you’ve read correctly. One of the most ICONIC games of all time, Pac-Man is playable on the Switch – and for free! I think we all know how Pac-man works by now but in case you forgot, you eat dots, devour Power Pellets, and chomp ghosts like in the classic arcade game.

However, to give it a modern twist, Nintendo added a competitive atmosphere, with every choice you make impacting the other 98 players playing their own games separately. As it says on the home page “A 99-man Battle Royale against players from around the world!”

Eat some fruits, get more dots, and be the last one standing! Note that a paid membership to Nintendo Switch Online is required to play Pac-Man 99 which is a let-down for a free game you might have been excited to play without spending a penny.

  1. Rocket League

Rocket League

The name Rocket League probably has you asking the question “This game is about Rockets, right?” Well, not quite as Rocket League is in fact a football game … with rocket powered cars! This combination works surprisingly well, the thrill of boosting around the arena attempting to score goals and take out your opposing team is very much a joy and with it all coming free of charge, what’s not to like?

rocket league gameplay

You need to find just the right angles to bump the ball with your customizable car to score a goal into the opposite team’s net, whilst also being fast enough to block the ball from trickling into your team’s net; it’s a real clash of race skills and football skills.

What’s more is this game has split-screen option that will still let you both play online for free, so if you and your little brother want a game to play with each other, Rocket League is a great option.

  1. Super Kirby Clash

Kirby Clash

What better way to end this free game list on the Nintendo Switch than with the adorable and cool little spherical pink bubble that we all love named Kirby.

Experience a surprisingly in-depth RPG (Role Playing Game) through this multiplayer actioner that shows you a side of Kirby you haven’t seen before. Turns out he’s not all about inhaling everything he sees and floating in the air, he’s can actually be rather violent.

kirby gameplay

In Super Kirby Clash, he comes to save the Dream Kingdom from numerous monsters and most importantly defeat Hornhead. In his team of other colourful blobs with various skills is Yellow Kirby, Blue Kirby and Green Kirby, who are all playable, with a sword or a hammer, a healing potion or a magical wand respectively.

You can play online with the Nintendo Online membership but there’s also an alternative option in which you can play by yourself with AIs – and to be honest, they’re pretty helpful, which is often not the case in RPG games.
