When moving into a new home it’s vital to protect yourself against the risk of fire but also against a silent killer in the shape of carbon monoxide. This gas is odourless, colourless and tasteless gas that can kill within minutes of high concentrations.

The quality of air in an enclosed place is vitally important and becoming a prominent source of concern you can even monitor things like room temperature, humidity and radon as we did in our review of the Airthings View Radon. It’s also important to monitor other pollutants such as Carbon Monoxide. In this review, we are looking at the X-Sense SC01-W smoke and carbon monoxide which offers discreet protection to both smoke and carbon monoxide but with an affordable price tag.

Design

The SC01-W is built in a well-made cylindrical plastic casing that provides 360-degree detection. The alarm is a high-capacity lithium battery for long-term use and comes with 2 built-in sensors :

  • Photoelectric – Detects the presence of smoke
  • Electrochemical- Analyse the level of carbon monoxide present in the indoor air of a room measured in PPM.

The Photoelectric detection technology has been proven to be generally more sensitive than the ionization-based approach found in other smoke alarms on the market. The benefit of using this method of detection it can detect larger particles produced by greater amounts of smouldering fires which comes from slow-burning sources such as cigarettes burning on a sofa which could take hours before they burst into flames.

That cylindrical design has a speaker running around the front of the alarm that if an alert occurs you are greeted with a powerful 85dB siren. In the middle is a small LCD screen with a LED indicator under the screen that flashes and changes colour depending on the situation, it uses a traffic light system to indicate what issues arise. Under the LED indicator is a test/silence button so you can double check the alarm is working and silence the alarm after you have burnt toast again.

Moving to the rear of the SC01-W detector is a plastic pin used to disconnect the battery. An irreversible operation must be performed when the battery is empty. The battery life has a time span of 10 years and the fact they are wireless installation and come with mountain brackets are easy to install. Speaking of the wireless connection all units are interlinked so if one goes off they all go off regardless of where they are located in the home.

Performance

As mentioned the X-Sense SC01-W can be connected to up to 24 additional detectors as long as they are X-Sense models. This happens due to the radio frequency module which allows them to all be interconnected.

The SC01-W will not go off without good reason and won’t trigger inappropriately. X-Sense has also considered the battery life and you will notice when fitted the LCD screen is on standby which does not allow you to view the information at a glance.

You will only see the LED indicator flash green once a minute to indicate everything is safe. This means users won’t need to worry about charging or replacing batteries. When it’s time to replace the device the alarm will beep once every minute and the LED indicator will flash yellow meaning it’s time to replace the unit.

Verdict

The X-Sense SC01-W is sophisticated in that the buzzer sounds in a way that allows the user to easily understand the situation that is occurring. I found the feature of being able to interconnect up to 24 alarms (X-Sense models only) really did remove any concerns I had that I might miss an alarm going off. There will be a slightly different sound and LED backlight pattern to the area in which the alert was detected. This is very useful for the user to know where the problem is happening in the house.

The LCD screen is clear and easy to read which indicates real-time carbon monoxide concentrations, battery life and the alarm working status. There is also a silence option on the device. If the situation has not dispersed the alarm will resound after a few minutes to alert those around.

They are cost-wise very affordable with interconnectable devices costing £39.99 for 1, £109.99 for 3 & £219.99 for a pack of 6 via Amazon, The SC01-W does a fantastic job of keeping you and your family safe with its budget-friendly cost and the fact it will detect both smoke and carbon monoxide. Plus with 10-year battery life, it’s hard to give these devices anything less than a 5-star review.
