They are back and with a bang! Oppo has returned to Europe and the UK in the shape of the Oppo Find X8 Pro. This phone is at the top end of the market priced at £1049 but there is real value in this phone.

This phone is perfect for those who want to take some seriously good photos with a quad 50MP camera setup including two periscope lenses co-developed by Hasselblad which will blow the mobile industry apart!  Performance-wise it is using MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 chipset which raises a few eyebrows but more on that later in the review. This phone also comes with a massive 5910mAh battery that will last longer than you can. The battery also comes with a crazy 80W fast charging which gets you from zero to 100% in about 5o minutes. All of this puts it in the same bracket as phones in the premium phone market such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or iPhone 16 Pro Max.

First Impressions

We got to test this phone after being invited to the recent EU launch of this phone back in November in a very cold but stunning Paris. The Oppo Find X8 Pro comes with a premium design, a 6.78-inch display and as mentioned a camera system that blows our socks off the zoom on this device is incredible and it pairs that zoom with incredible detail and magnification it’s like nothing I have ever tested. Below is an example of a picture I took with no zoom of the Arc de Triomphe from quite some distance then I zoomed in using the AI telescope Zoom that gives you 60x Zoom and the results are insane!

We have been testing this phone for a few weeks now and it offers incredibly quick performance and innovative UI animations that make this device feel super smooth. Now the phone comes in two colour options Pearl White or Space Black in this review we got sent the Pearl White and when comparing the two while in Paris I prefer the Pearl White I think it just pops more.

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

Under the bonnet, as mentioned this phone is powered using the MediaTek 9400 chipset paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage allowing you to take as many pictures as you like. The use of the Android 15 & ColorOS wrap allowed me to do everyday tasks with complete ease, Nothing was too much trouble with this handset. The only small negative is they have paired this with a lot of bloatware which is a tad annoying but hardly a deal breaker.

Now picking up the elephant in the room some might question just how original this device is. There can be a lot of comparisons to something like the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This is hardly surprising but interpreting Apple features in my view is a benefit for those who take the jump from iOS to Android.

Design

The one thing you can say instantly about this device is how gorgeous it looks. The Pearl White version we have comes with a unique pearlescent pattern that gives you that understated but beautiful look to it.

The phone is slightly on the weighty side at 215 grams, but you soon get used to it. The camera housing is made of multi-layered polished metal rather than glass. The use of polished metal on the rear cover gives the handset the artistic feel of marble and what is unique about this handset is the way the material is manufactured no two patterns are exactly alike.  The Space Black version comes with a frosted glass finish if you decide to buy the black over the pearl which I have had can be a tad prone to damage.

The rear of the device also houses that large circular Hasselblad-branded camera bump it does not have a massive protrude measuring just 3mm thick. They have also got creative with the design with the camera bump being completely symmetrical with all four lenses dotted around its circumference with the iconic Hasselblad H taking pride of place in the centre.

The rest of the design of the Find X8 Pro comes with a fairly curvy body and rounded edges and corners that help the phone fit perfectly in your hand.

Moving to the front of the phone it hosts a 6.78-inch screen that is also curved slightly on each edge provides no other purpose than to provide a nicer feeling when swiping in from the side of the screen.  The selfie camera is a reasonable inconspicuous punch-hole design that serves as the midpoint of the software-only dynamic cloud. The phone also seems quite durable with aluminium rails and comes with a screen protector pre-installed.

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

Moving around the frame there is a new quick button that can be found on the lower right-hand side of the frame. This button is just a shortcut to the camera. On the other side is the power and volume control.

Overall, this phone is one of the most durable handsets on the market not only does come with an aluminium alloy frame that comes with apparent shock-absorbing properties. It also comes with reinforced glass protection and a case provided in the box to boost protection further. It also comes with IP68 dust and water resistance but takes things further with IP69 resistance protecting it from heated jets of water which is nice but in what situation in life would I put my phone anywhere near heated jets of water?

Display

The Oppo Find X8 Pro comes with a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a pixel-packed 1264 x 2780 resolution that strikes a nice balance between FHD and the WQHD+ you see in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra while offering a respectable 450ppi.

The device also offers a 120Hz refresh rate that works alongside Oppo’s animation technology to offer a truly fluid experience.  The phone also supports a 2060Hz super high frequency PWM dimming resulting in minimal discomfort and eyestrain. The display does not offer the highest resolution on the market, but I think it ticks most boxes in terms of offering images and videos that look sharp and with plenty of colour ideal for watching a film or playing a game. This phone also comes with a respectable 800 nits going up to a max of 4500 nits. In testing, I found the phone to be nice and bright in outdoor use, but the auto-brightness can something make the screen a little dim indoors.

Software

The Oppo Find X8 Pro uses Android 15 with ColorOS wrapped over the top and the result is a fantastic experience It is as smooth as a baby’s bum!  The ColorOS comes with some of the highest-quality animations you will find on a mobile phone period. This results in ridiculously smooth navigation in combination with Oppo’s fantastic UI animations, depth of field effects and other visual tricks that take the operating system on this phone to new highs unless you’re using an iPhone.

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

ColorOS 15 unfortunately screams everything about an iPhone from the wallpapers to the layout of the settings you feel like it’s an iPhone. Oppo’s Dynamic Cloud seems very similar to Dynamic Island on an iPhone. I guess imitation is a form of flattery!  However, they have taken things up a level with the Touch To Share feature allowing you to send a photo or video to an iPhone by tapping the two phones together. This doesn’t require an internet connection as it’s sent peer-to-peer but does require iPhone owners to have the O+ app installed its a cool feature to have.

Continuing the software provided it will come as no surprise AI is provided thanks to Google Gemini supporting circle to search, writing tools, document summarization, voice memo transcription and photo editing tools which all come together to form Oppo’s AI Toolbox which was first seen in the OPPO Reno 12 Pro 5G. The AI Summary lets you generate summaries from a page. AI Speak reads content aloud and AI Writer helps you write, or rewrite text all these features can be used in any app 1st or 3rd party all accessible via the sidebar.

Using a 1st Party app the recorder app can transcribe and generate summaries of recordings, while the notes app offers an AI formatting assistant that lets you restructure your notes with a tap.

The Oppo Find X8 Pro also comes with some very useful photo editing tools that will allow this device to compete with the likes of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and Samsung S24 Ultra. These tools include:

AI Clarity Enhancer – Transforms low-resolution pictures and cropped photos into crisp, clear and natural-looking Ultra-HD images.

AI Unblur- Restores natural details, colours and textures such as skin and hair. So you can truly appreciate those moving moments.

AI Refection Remover- Ever taken a photo of some delicious cakes in a shop cabinet and seen the pic and was disappointed with the reflection? This tool removes glare and reflections in glass to reveal the photo you were trying to capture all along.

Performance

In the past, Oppo have used Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets but with this Oppo Find X8 Pro, they have decided to use a MediaTek Dimensity 940 and have paired it up with 16GB of RAM and 512G of storage. I expect a few eyebrows have been raised especially with the Snapdragon 8 Elite available.

When using this phone as my everyday phone it performed very well, I was not affected by any slowdown in general use and could switch between apps with ease. This device as mentioned comes with a range of AI tools and all offer fast load times with no lag in sight. The 16GB of RAM provides the user with plenty of headroom for multitasking and AI. The combination of the RAM and internal spec also makes this a fantastic gaming phone.

Overall, The Find X8 Pro works like a dream with no noticeable strain on the battery and you will find you can do day-to-day activities even faster from opening files, downloading apps and switching apps this phone gives you a satisfactory experience and if I had to say one thing about this phone is it’s rapid, but it can get a little hot when working hard for example powering demanding games.

When it comes to connectivity this phone has your back with Wi-Fi 7, NFC, Bluetooth 5.4, Dual-Sim connectivity, Triple-antenna Wi-Fi setup and a crazy 20 cellular antennas for improved performance in busy environments like a concert.

Battery Life

The Oppo Find X8 Pro comes with a silicon-carbon battery which allows for higher-density batteries in slimmer form factors than the normal lithium-ion battery. The 5910mAh cell combined with the 40% boost to efficiency with the Dimensity 9400 chipset allows this phone to just run and run.

When testing we spent quite some time on social media platforms such as Instagram, and Facebook, taking photos and listening to Spotify for up to 5 hours and made a few calls and by the end of the day it was still going strong. I continued the same process on day two and we got to about 3 pm when it hit 10% battery.  If you wanted it to last even longer you could adjust the refresh rate and adjust the resolution but that feels like a bit much for me. Especially considering how good the recharging process is.

When it comes to recharging this device Oppo provides an 80W charger using Oppo’s own SuperVOOC technology as well as a 55W PD charging for those in the EU alongside 50W AirVooc wireless charging and a special Mag Charge case meaning it works well with my bedside charging device.

When using the provided 80W SuperVooc charger that comes in the box. This provides a super quick charging experience giving you 50% in just 20 minutes or a full charge taking just under 50 minutes. It’s not the fastest on the market but with a full battery in less than an hour, you should not find fault with that. Want more this device is also compatible with reverse wireless charging.

Smartphone Camera Review by James Robertson-Milligan

Hello and welcome back to another camera review by me James, So the editor handed me this powerful Oppo Find X8 Pro. Now I have reviewed Oppo phones in the past and the cameras have always been amazing. So for this one, I was expecting big things and to be honest, I was not let down at all, the thing about this device is that it is enriched with AI camera technology coming from the Hasselblad cameras, Hasselblad is known for making rich, crisp faultless lenses that bring you the best from each image and this camera does live up to the expectations. So what is AI technology in cameras, let me explain.

Photo quality
AI cameras can take better photos by identifying the subject and adjusting camera settings. For example, Google Pixel’s AI camera can combine multiple photos into a single image without blur from camera shake. AI cameras can also adjust colour balance and lighting to accurately represent people.

Object detection
AI cameras can identify objects and detect safety hazards. They can detect faces, intrusions, and abandoned objects.

Video analysis
AI cameras can process vast amounts of data in real-time for video analysis. For example, AI cameras can learn what is normal behavior for people, vehicles, machines, and the environment

So with the Oppo Find X8 Pro you know you will get defined and clear results with every photo and the speed at which the camera processes all this information is sublime as there is no lag at all from taking the image to the result being shown.

This camera system is the most powerful camera setup we have seen especially when it comes down to optical zoom and night photography. This phone comes stacked with modes, features and shooting options built into this phone making it a fantastic point-and-shoot experience.

Camera upgrades often result in a big camera bump making phones uncomfortable to use sideways when watching a film or gaming. What Oppo did to solve this common issue is the innovative design of the Find X8 Pro’s quad-camera bump has been reduced by 40% compared to its predecessor now just 3.58mm without impacting the camera quality.

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

The aesthetics are pleasing for this device, it is a beautiful circular quadcam that sits in the back of the phone in a circular design, The Oppo Find X8 Pro carries forward OPPO’s iconic Cosmos ring design, elegantly framing the powerful quad-camera within.

The four cameras that sit within that Cosmos ring design all have a 50MP sensor ensuring the same level of quality across its wide optical zoom range. The camera set-up is made up of the following:

  • Ultra Wide Camera
  • Main Wide Camera
  • 3x telephoto
  • 6x telephoto

These cameras all feel like powerful tools instead of tacked-on gimmicks and I have to say the ultra-wide camera is unreal! Zooming into the telephoto camera feels like a natural extension of the main camera and some excellent software trickery means the transition between lenses when zooming is hardly noticeable.

The camera system post-processing is very active some consumers will prefer a less edited look but I think it adds a nice amount of colour depth, contrast and sharpness. This directly opposes the brightened style favoured by the Samsung Galaxy or Apple iPhone flagship devices. As for video, the phone shoots in 4K at 60fps with the ability to shoot in slow motion at up to 480fps in 720p.

The Oppo Find X8 Pro also comes with a new way to control the camera system and this is the Quick Button it’s a sensitive button that supports swiping touch gestures.  The quick button does the following a double press opens the camera app, a single press takes a photo, a long press takes a burst of photos and swiping back and forth in landscape allows you to zoom. The quick button is effective in reducing the time from thought to photo.

Jumping back into the camera setup as mentioned the Oppo Find X8 Pro uses the Hasselblad master camera system with four 50MP cameras. It comes with the functions you would expect from a camera phone these days, you have “Master” which will act as your pro setting, Video, Standard Photo, and Portrait. Then you have the “More Section” which Oppo has packed full of extra goodies such as Hi-Res, Panno, night, Film, Slow Mo, Time-Lapse Long Exposure, Duel Video, a nifty document scanner, and X-pan.

Oppo has put the end user at the heart of this with its features and what the phone can do, it is basically like having a very expensive DSLR camera in your pocket. The Oppo Find X8 Pro unlocks a new dimension of zoom capabilities with AI Telescope Zoom, a breakthrough technology that uses AI and computational photography to significantly improve zoom quality at long distances.

AI Telescope Zoom automatically activates at 10x and beyond, analyzing the image at a pixel level, utilizing the full 50MP resolution of the telephoto camera to supplement natural detail loss with the power of AI. At 60x, when the physical raw data from the telephoto camera is very limited, Find X8 Pro will activate further on-device AI Models to enhance details. Leveraging AI Telescope Zoom’s incredible reach.

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

The OPPO Find X8 Pro introduces Stage Mode. what this does is even if you’re far from the stage you can still capture clear shots at 20 or 30 times zoom with enough clarity to capture the mood of a concert. Perfect for anyone going to see Oasis this year. The Find X8 Pro also comes with lightning snap what this does is capture moving objects which sometimes results in a blurry photo or you simply miss the moment. We tested this at the launch event using a football spinner going at high speed and the Find X8 Pro will unleash a burst of up to 7 frames per second, rivalling the capabilities of a dedicated DSLR. this rapid-fire shooting mode ensures every moment is frozen for you to curate later. Simply tap and hold the shutter button and you will activate the lightning snap.

In Hasselblad Portrait Mode, you can also create a dreamy soft lighting portrait shot that simulates a white mist filter, adding a unique standout style for your social posts. Livephoto captures the essence of fleeting moments but has often faced limitations on Android devices. Leveraging its powerful hardware, The Oppo Find X8 Pro is the first Android phone that offers Livephoto without compromising on quality. Both the still photo and accompanying video clip are of exceptional quality, sharing a matching aesthetic.

Livephoto videos for Find X8 Pro are also enhanced with HDR and advanced stabilization, allowing you to select the perfect frame from the captured video even if the initial still image didn’t quite nail it. Find X8 Pro’s Livephoto implementation sets a new standard for Android devices, rivalling and often surpassing iOS.

So let’s have a look at some of the sample photos as always photos that I use for reviews as everyday photos that are natural and unedited so that you can see the image as the camera intended it to be.

Zoom –  This phone packs a 120x zoom and it works!! tested it up to 55x zoom and I was getting a bit of camera shake and took a couple of attempts to lock onto my chosen image but the result was amazing, no fuzz and a clear clean crisp image

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

Hi-Res –  Hi-Res will take a picture with colour and boost the colour to give you a real high-def finish as if it was taken in 4k technology, it works well and will give colours in your photo a real rich and bold effect that will draw the eye!

Selfie Mode– Now we all love a selfie for our socials, and this camera will not let you down, it gives you a crisp clean finish with high attention to detail so you know your socials will never again be let down.

Portrait Mode –  Portrait is a setting that I love, I love the soft subtle blur that you get in the background to a photo and the main image really does pop, and again this phone is no expectation and does sparkle every time, My trusty model Murphy always likes to get in the action for a quick pose and again the Hasselblad camera on this phone just works it is quite possibly one of the best I have seen.

Photo Mode – Photos on this camera come out amazing and flawless with the 50mp camera that is packed into this phone, I can honestly say with this phone and whatever the setting the camera will not let you down, the images come out so clear, crisp and rich in colour and light. If you connected your phone to a printer or ordered photo quality prints from this phone you would soon be filling your walls with excellent images which would look professionally captured and if you also have a DSLR camera having this in your pocket your DSLR will end up redundant!

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

Pro Mode-  Pro mode is a great little number, as you can fettle with the camera settings to get different light-end exposure balances and mess around with the aperture to get DSLR quality results without the use of a DSLR, you get really good results from this in any light condition, and this phone lives up to that with this setting.

Night mode – Night mode is again a setting that we see a lot more of now on phones as it will allow you to get excellent camera results in low light or dark conditions and again this phone comes up bloody well with excellent results every time.

XPAN mode. It’s a great tool for panoramic shots. XPAN is a shooting mode that will allow you to take panoramic shots in a quick and easy format.

Oppo Find X8 Pro Review

So in conclusion this phone surpassed all expectations and stands out, Using the camera was effortless and nice and easy to use, to get the full experience from some of the features such as long exposure you will need to invest in a mobile phone tripod but they are cheap enough to buy from outlets such as Amazon. I think if you also downloaded an editing software tool such as Snapseed then this phone will truly bring out the professional in you and will make your photos stand out from the crowd.

If you pitched this phone alongside the iPhone 16 pro and the Samsung S24 Ultra I personally think this phone will win every time. For me, this is a solid 5 stars in this department.

Verdict

The Oppo Find X8 Pro is simply the best phone we have tested all of 2024 and will take some beating as we enter 2025 and has been awarded our Editors Choice Award!

The reason for this statement is simple it excels in every department. Buying a phone for the camera alone the quad 50MP camera system including two periscope lenses will blow its competition out of the park in most conditions. The zoom on this device offers the most detailed and vibrant images with the help of a bit of Hasselblad editing takes my images to the next level.

This device is an excellent comeback to Europe and the UK for Oppo. The Find X8 Pro offers a stylish and standout design on the rear and that 6.78-inch AMOLED display is bright and immersive with zero lag. I loved the screen experience with minimal curvature that makes swipes from the edge of the phone feel nice.

Price at £1049 it stacks up against the competition and if I had to find some negatives some might question to use of MediaTek Dimensity 9400 instead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, but I did not see much of an issue here. The other negative could be the fact it has a tad too much bloatware.

Overall, it’s hard not to love this phone’s fantastic camera setup, the quick button adds more control, the Premium design, impressive battery life with speedy battery charging offer a great all-around flagship device.

Welcome back Oppo!
