The realme 7 Pro available for £279 from Amazon

Much like every other manufacturer at this time of year, realme have released a new series of devices, the 7, in time for the inevitable Black Friday discounts and Christmas deals.

Realme have been one of the Chinese manufacturers, along with Oppo that has flown under the radar in the UK market for some time now. Although packed with great technology at very competitive prices, the manufacturers haven’t captured the market in the same way Huawei was able to, albeit with a lot more marketing. However, with a quad-camera, big battery, AMOLED display and under-screen fingerprint reader, the RealMe 7Pro appears on the surface to be a steal at a score under £300.

I tested the Mirror Silver variation, that looks like more of a sky blue in the same way that the Mystic Bronze Note 20 Ultra from Samsung looks pink and I was using the (x) GB version of the device as it is the only one available.

Design

It’s a great device aesthetically. Although the mirror silver does have a hint of blue it looks great. The camera bump is minimal and, aside from my personal preference to having larger phones, I couldn’t find any large criticism. Interesting points I found with the design include the receiver dent at the top of the device and the camera hole in the top left corner, both maximising the screen.

The only criticism I have is that the chin at the bottom of the device is a little large. It reminds me of the Pixel devices, I know it’s only a small thing and definitely something you could get used to but nevertheless, it is there.

Display

Possibly the best feature of the whole device, this Super AMOLED 6.4 inch display makes everything on it beautiful. The camera shots are clear and streaming the latest Netflix is a dream.

The only draw was the 60Hz refresh rate. It is a shame and did impact gaming a little, however, at the price point, it’s hard to be too critical. Overall, you will definitely get value for money on the display.

Performance

It’s a great device, in terms of what’s inside, the realme 7pro runs on a SnapDragon 720G octa-core chipset and 8GB of RAM which is enough for the average user. Overall this device performs ok but when playing Call of Duty or Pokemon Go there is a little lag and it’s just not as smooth as other devices. For day to day use, this is great though and you can certainly play these games on this device.

Camera

The camera is one of those things I’ve struggled to come to a judgement on. The set up is a 64MP primary snapper, 8MP 119 degree wide-angle lens as well as a B&W portrait and macro lens. Overall the images are good and, in the right lighting conditions, can be great.

Provided an excellent image when you have a good quality of light

The photographs that are produced in the first place look good and look striking but on a second inspection detail in bricks and trees are lost and end up just looking noisy.

There is also a clear difference between the wide-angle camera and the normal snapper. The wide-angle, to my mind, looks a lot more vibrant with the main snapper looking dull and colours are washed out. It’s a similar story for the zoom, the images are good, but upon further inspection, the device leaves a lot to be desired.

Battery

I had no real complaints about the battery. The 4,500 mAh battery is a big one for a device of this size and can be relied on for a day’s usage with the additional perk of being capable of a fast charge which is very convenient.

Would I buy it?

Overall this is a great device and for under £300 is verging on a steal. It’ll last all day and a little during the night too and is certainly not to slow you down. Although the camera is dependent on the lighting conditions, it is still good enough to show your friends snaps from a trip or family photo and the display will definitely be good enough for a bit of streaming while you wait for you mates.
