The CAT S62 Pro – £529 from C247.com or Laptops Direct
Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars
When you think of rugged phones you want a phone that can handle everything you can throw at it. This phone is designed for the construction industry in mind and in this review, we are looking at the market-leading Caterpillar and their latest creation the CAT S62 Pro.
Costing £529 from a range of e-tailers such as Laptops Direct or C247.com and this phone comes with the following features:
- Thermal Imaging
- Drop Tested up to 6ft on Steel
- IP69 Dust & Waterproof
- Gorilla Glass 6
- 4000mAh Battery
Design
When you unbox the S62 Pro the handset is as rugged and substantial as you might expect. The S62 Pro comes with a metal band that runs around all four corners that acts as a divider between the gorilla glass 6 screen and rubberised base of the phone. The design is finished with the use of small bolts on each side to add to the rugged look.
The controls on this headset are as you might expect. The power button, volume control on the right side and on the left side you have a shortcut button that could be used to bring up the thermal imaging camera or another function.
On the base of this phone is the centrally positioned USB-C port and a built-in speaker that has been made waterproof thanks to the IP69 rating.
On the back of the phone, you have the fingerprint sensor that is positioned in the centre of the phone. Also on the back of the phone is a camera which is in a raised projection which seems a little odd as this stops the phone to lay flat.
Hardware
Let’s have a look at what makes this phone tick. The S62 Pro comes with a Snapdragon 660 that comes with Adreno 512 GPU along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. This makes the phone very powerful and runs everything you do on this phone with ease and efficiency. The Screen on the on the S62 Pro comes with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 and that offers a bright screen for everyday use.
The battery on the S62 Pro is the only major negative at only 4000mAh it’s a little on the low side especially considering the CAT S42 offers slightly more battery at 4200mAh or the Doogee S95 Pro that has a battery life of 5150mAh. I feel for the kind of use this phone is for especially the Thermal Imaging the battery life is a letdown. However, if you’re going to just use the phone for everyday use it will last you a good day and a half.
Camera/Thermal Imaging
The Cat 62 pro, however, is a rugged builder’s phone. This handset would not be suited to a white-collar worker that wants to take pictures of his day out with his family. So, let’s look at the camera specifics on this rugged handset!
The main camera is a box standard no thrills point and click 8mp camera which does what it says on the tin it will take a picture it comes with an 8x zoom and a few colour enhancers and that is it, it doesn’t come with a super wide-angle or Macro shooting or any fancy gimmicks.
It’s the thermal imaging that really captures the camera on this phone. Having said that thou it will take a fairly decent picture in normal camera mode and capture what it needs to in its 8mp capability with good end results. The phone also holds a front-facing selfie camera that will take a decent selfie should the need arise that will capture the image just fine.
The Thermal imaging camera is a lepton 3.5 professional-grade camera that offers 1440 x 1080 HD output. The thermal camera uses MSX linear overlay and can offer a thermal scope from -20°C to 400°C. The Thermal imaging sensor is an improvement on the Cat S61 that uses the lepton 2.5 sensors as offers 4x the number of thermal pixels.
What appeals on this phone is the thermal imaging on this handset, this is defiantly an excellent piece of kit especially for someone like me that has no concept of what I should and shouldn’t touch in case it’s hot or cold it will also mark the heat temperature and record that on the actual photo as a point of reference to go back to. It allows you to check what you’re touching and what can be touched before you go about with your work, or if you have a multitude of pipework and need to determine what pipe has hot running water and what has cold running water.
So for a novice like me, this is a really useful tool to have on a phone but then this phone was made for tradesmen and that is the showpiece. The handset will take an image in the Thermal mode then you can pull down on the image after to see the actual picture underneath. They say that with this phone you can see underfloor pipework and heating etc though tiles and carpets etc but I haven’t been able to confirm this as I don’t have underfloor heating or pipes running under my floors I had a lot of fun with the thermal imaging on this phone but this is defiantly a phone that is aimed and geared towards builders and tradesmen that would benefit from this.
Verdict
The CAT S62 Pro offers a very good phone for the construction industry I would say ideally if you’re in the plumbing sector this is where this phone shines. This phone was very easy to use and the star of the show is the thermal imaging function. It really is a cut above anything else in the market currently.
If you compare the S62 Pro to other rugged phones on the market not only is the thermal imaging but its the build that shows this phone is ready for anything. Its been drop tested up to 6ft on steel and offers IP69 rated meaning this handset is water & Dust Proof and the phone also comes with gorilla glass 6. This phone is ready for war. Making it the perfect device for the construction industry.
The only negative you can pull from this phone is the fact the battery could do with being a larger capacity but apart from that what you have here is the ultimate construction partner.
