The Mobvoi Ticwatch Pro 3 Ultra is the second watch powered by Google Wear OS after we got the chance to review the Oppo Watch.

First Impressions

If you read my Oppo watch review the one negative I had was the fact the design was basically a copy of the Apple Watch. The Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra does not share that issue.

The watch actually reminds me a little of the Garmin D2 Delta Aviator watch when you consider the design. The cost of the watch comes in at £289 via Currys.com but do shop around as the price does vary a little for example Amazon sell it for £246.50 for the Bluetooth option or £280 for the 4G/LTE model.  In this review, we will talk more about the range of intelligent features and also find out how my father in law found the watch as he has helped me test the watch over the last few weeks.

Who is Mobvoi?

Mobvoi is a brand that started in 2012 and there focus has been on AI interaction and Hardware-Software Integration within both the B2B & B2C markets. They currently operate in over 40 counties worldwide. Mobvoi’s aim is to define the next generation of human-machine interaction.

Design

The Ticwatch pro 3 ultra has been designed for the rugged market and for those who love the great outdoors. Need a watch that does not only look good and perform well but can handle everything mother nature hits this watch.

In terms of the build, you have a stainless steel and high strength nylon watch case which is 47mm providing that long-lasting quality you would expect from a rugged watch. The watch measures 12.3mm in thickness and weighs 41g.

Inside the watch, it has been built using military standard 810G materials that can handle extreme temperature, low pressure and humidity. The watch is IP68 rated meaning it can handle dust, dirt, sand and can be submerged in freshwater to a max depth of 1.5m for up to 30 minutes.

The watch also comes with a 1.4 inch AMOLED display which is protected by Corning Gorilla glass to add strength to the display that partners up well with the rest of the watch. The Screen is fully touch-sensitive and the corning gorilla glass is anti-fingerprint in testing, you got no lag at all between any of the interactions on the screen.

The watch also has a chronograph-style bezel that has two rotating crowns that double up as buttons as well. The rotation just seems to be for a show as it does not allow you to scroll through screens.

Overall I was impressed with the design it looks really good and the mix of an IP68 rating and Military standard 810G materials means regardless of the weather this watch will survive and can even handle extreme sports you may do regularly.

Features

The TicWatch Pro3 Ultra runs of Google Wear OS which I learnt how to use after my Oppo watch review and the tile layout is identical. You will find all the normal apps you come to expect from a Wear OS watch. However, you also get a few apps only available on this watch such as TicHealth, TicExercise & TicZen.

In addition to the apps and the tile layout, you can also swipe between different watch faces and can also download new options via the Wear OS app.  This is done by pressing the display and swiping across to select.

The face of the watch can be altered either by the app (easily downloadable onto your phone) or by pressing then sliding the front of the watch. I found this a good novelty but then did tend to settle on just one.

This watch also comes with access to google assistant which allows you to ask questions, set reminders, set timings etc.  Thanks to a built-in microphone and speaker the watch will hear you and respond and considering my hearing can be a little temperamental I found the watch to be nice and loud which was a blessing.

The watch also comes with NFC to allow for Google Pay, and you can also access the Google Play Store where you can download third-party apps like Strava & Google Fit You also have access to Spotify as it’s preloaded to let you take advantage of your favourite playlist even when offline.

Last but not least the watch once set up provides you with a number of notifications such as when emails arrive, Ring doorbell notifications as well as weather updates and other alerts you set up on your phone.

Health Features

Moving to the health features on this watch as you might expect is stacked with sensors giving you the best health and fitness tracking results such as:

  • Accelerometer
  • Heart Rate Sensor with irregular heartbeat notifications
  • Barometer
  • SPO2 sensor
  • Low Latency off-body sensor

One of the key reasons people like to purchase a smartwatch is for the heart rate variability and the Ticwatch also offers a fatigue assessment tracker. The fatigue assessment is similar to that of Garmin’s body battery score. However, the fatigue assessment goes a step further and also indicated mental fatigue as well as physical fatigue.

They work out your mental fatigue based on heart rate, sleep and activity levels. It will help the user review their daily habits and make changes when necessary.

In addition to the Google Wear Os app, the watch also requires the Mobvoi app. The app is not a bad app but I feel it’s time for a little update it feels a little dated.

It also allows you to download additional fitness apps like google fit or Strava which I love using for cycling. I found the Mobvoi app easy to use it just need a little work on its appearance.

Fitness tracking

The TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra also has a dedicated watch widget to let you glance at the active time, exercise time and the number of steps taken.

When reviewing the results we found the step recording can be as much as 500 steps off other smartwatches we have reviewed. This watch just like my Apple Watch also alerts you for inactivity when sitting down for too long.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS

When you are working out this watch offers motion sensors for activities like Treadmill running, cross trainer, Swimming & dedicated HIIT mode and a barometer for outdoor tracking.  On the Mobvoi App, you have TicExercise which allows for up to 100 workout modes including indoor rowing and other exercises such as Tennis & karate.

You can set goals such as time, distance, calories & steps which is ideal for helping you achieve fitness goals.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS

My father in law found the walking tracking the most useful and found the GPS to be quite accurate in terms of recording distance and the total number of steps. However, he did find the choice of colours and the size of the font used a little difficult to read especially when outside.

Sleep Mode

The TicSleep app works great for automatic sleep tracking. You can set up your sleep goals in the app in regards to the time you go to bed and the time you wake up. When it’s time to wake up the watch starts to vibrate before the alarm. If the app senses you are in a deep sleep that vibrate becomes the most annoying alarm.

The issue with this alarm is you can’t seem to shut it off normally. The only way to stop the alarm is to power down the watch which seems a crazy way to turn the alarm off. Hopefully, a firmware update will solve this issue.

Performance

So over the last few weeks, I allowed my father in law to test the watch as he enjoys the outdoors whether it’s country walks or a round of golf so he had more of an opportunity to review the watch.

When using the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra it runs really well. This I due to the snapdragon 4100 processor paired with 1GB of RAM. This watch performed very well and could handle any task that it was given. The manufacturer mentions the chipset runs of 2.0GHz and also allows Bluetooth 5.0.

The watch also provides the user with advanced algorithms that monitor your heart by capturing every heartbeat, monitoring the rhythm and also alerting you to any irregular heartbeats.

In testing, we found the heart rate sensor was very accurate. We also paired this up with the GPS while he was away on a walking holiday and found the GPS followed the route even when he went completely off the track.

The dual display was great most of the time but when exercising the normal wrist flick we have got used to via the Apple watch. The Ticwatch did not display the data we wanted. In order to get that you need to tap the screen for the actual data. He also found getting the results a little tricky as the font was a little on the small side.

I also asked him to review this watch in the gym using the sport mode and the results were impressive. The heart rate was recorded very accurately but when he moved from the cardio to the strength training the watch did not record reps this is not a massive issue as am yet to discover a watch that can offer that level of recording.

Battery Life

The watch also comes with a 577mAH battery that provides 72 hours battery life when in use and also provides 45-day battery standby mode otherwise known as an essential mode. This mode shuts down all typical functions in an effort to extend battery life. You will still run features such as sleep tracking & heart rate monitoring and time and the LCD top display.

In terms of use, you will find you will get 3 days of use this was included with 24-hour heart rate monitoring and blood oxygen tracking. In addition to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, notifications and exercises that require GPS tracking. Depending on the level of use the battery life will drop to 2.5 days.

When it’s time to charge you are given a magnetic charging cable that connects with ease and gives you a full battery in about 1 hr and 15 minutes.

Verdict

The TicWatach Pro 3 Ultra comes in at an attractive price point for a rugged watch that looks as good as this. It comes packed with some fantastic features that will allow those users who are looking to keep their health and fitness in check but might struggle for the more professional user.

I really like the Wear OS platform but the Mobvoi app needs a little refresh.  If you are an android user you will really enjoy this watch but as an IOS user, I had no real issues using this watch at all.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS

The only issue you may come across is the size of the watch its a large watch at 48mm meaning it might be too big for some users. I had no issues as I like a big watch it feels like a statement piece. Something people will notice and admire.

Overall, I was pleased with the 72 hours battery life and the durability of the watch with its integrated barometer its ideal for ambient air pressure and that IP68 rating makes it perfect for the great outdoors.
