Love them or hate them the keyboard is an essential part of a laptop or desktop and users can be quite picky about which keyboard suits them from mechanical keyboards most suited to our gaming friends to the scissor-switch keyboard which is what we are reviewing from dutch brand BakkerElkhuizen with the UltraBorad 950 wireless keyboard which costs £79.99 via Amazon.

Who is Bakker Elkhuizen?

The Dutch brand BakkerElkhuizen started back in 1994 as an ergonomic research company. They saw a gap in the market mainly due to a lack of practical solutions for ergonomically fitting out a computer workstation.  Fast forward to last year with the switch from office to home working due to the pandemic we are glad they saw this gap in the market.

They offer the right product regardless of if your workstation is fixed, mobile, flex and home workstations. The BakkerElkhuzen range can be found at various resellers in the EU, US, Canada and Australia with plans for further growth.

Design

The BakkerElkhuizen UltraBoard 950 screams functional it’s not the most attractive keyboard you will use but who cares about looks it a keyboard people needs to be functional. This keyboard is nice and compact and if you are like me who splits his time between home & the office you can use this keyboard anywhere just find a surface at home or at a standing desk. When it’s the end of the day and you need to travel it will fit nicely in a laptop bag.

The UltraBoard 950 Wireless as you might expect comes with rechargeable batteries and can be used on either a Windows or Mac which is ideal if you happen to use both from time to time.

The design of the keys are large and well-spaced making touch-typing feels intuitive while you do get some sound of the keys tapping when being pressed. It’s not that bad that it might annoy others near you.

The key presses are deep and to bottom out, you would need to apply quite some force. The UltraBoard 950 Wireless also allows you to change between the Windows & macOS layout with the press of the hotkey combinations:

  • Fn+W = Windows layout
  • FN+A= MacOS layout

You also get a number of hotkey buttons allowing you to take screenshots or open apps faster with ease. This keyboard connects via Bluetooth and pairing is a walk in the park and is charged via the Micro -USB port and the battery is very good. I have been using this keyboard every day for the last two weeks and it has shown no sign of requiring a charge. The manufacturer says a charge should last about 4 ½ weeks which is quite impressive.

The key difference with this keyboard is it has no numeric keypad which does reduce the size of the keyboard so if you work in accounts this keyboard is not for you!

The benefit of having a smaller more compact keyboard is the reaching distance to your mouse is smaller which reduces the load on your forearms. Research shows that 90% of users do not use the numeric keypad so you can see BakkerElkhuizen have done their research.

Verdict

This is a very decent portable keyboard that you can use anywhere and the benefit is it works on both Windows or macOS systems. It’s quite simple in design but that is the beauty of this keyboard.

If I had to find some negatives I guess the fact it comes with micro-USB over the more popular USB-C but it’s only a small negative. The other negative would be the fact it does not come with a numeric keypad so if you plan on using the number keys a lot this keyboard won’t suit you.

That said, if 90% of users are not concerned by the lack of numbers, this is a really good keyboard that has really improved my typing speed when writing reviews like this. Cost-wise you can find this keyboard for under £80 via Amazon making this an essential item of my new hybrid way of working.
