Some people go to a casino to unwind and have a few drinks. Some people just like the atmosphere. But the main reason many people try best casinos sites in NZ is to win life-changing amounts of money.
From simple scratchcards to high-stakes poker games, both land-based and online casinos in the US, are well known to be where dreams are made. Whilst you may not be able to grab any exciting online casino bonuses in the US in a land-based casino, plenty of people have still struck it big. Let’s take a closer look at some of these big casino wins.
$50 dollars turned into $40 million
Archie Karas, a Greek immigrant, had all his lucky stars aligned when he ventured into Las Vegas. In a rather riveting tale of rags to riches and then unfortunately back to rags again, he went from a meager $50 to a huge $40 million – only to lose it all.
He was a very strong poker player, playing in medium-stakes games. He thought he’d try his hand at the big kahuna – the Las Vegas strip – which turned out to be an incredibly lucrative hunch. He became affectionately known as ‘The Run’ throughout the casinos in Vegas thanks to his almost unbelievable win streak.
Over the time he played there, he accumulated over $40 million from a simple $50. His lucky streak came to an end though and he ended up losing almost every penny he’d won.
The biggest online casino jackpot win – $38 million
The 20-year-old student was just playing the progressive slot game ‘Arabian Knights’ whilst he was enjoying his downtime one evening. This story really shows that good things come when you least expect them!
A Billionaire wins $30 million in Vegas
We return to the spiritual home of gambling, Las Vegas, for the next winner. Kerry Packer visited the legendary MGM Grand Casino to try out some of the table games. Over the night he ended up with a staggering $40 million. It’s estimated that he spent about $10 million on the bets and tips to the staff, so a total profit of $30 million. Not bad for a night on the town!
Man wins $5 million. Then returns and wins $21 million more
Some might say Edwin Sherwin is one of the luckiest people alive. After this story, you might think so as well…
He was on a trip through America in an RV with his family. They stopped off at Las Vegas to enjoy the sites and soak in some of the famous atmosphere. Edwin thought that he may as well visit one of the casinos whilst he was visiting and so stopped off at The Mirage. That was a great choice by him as he walked out $4.6 million richer thanks to hitting the jackpot on a slot.
The story doesn’t end there though. On a return trip to Vegas 16 years later he visited another casino, The Cannery. He sat down on the Megabucks slot game and would you know it, he hit the jackpot again! This jackpot win was for almost four times the money he originally won – $21 million.
A young engineer is set for years
The next winner on our list is rather mysterious as not that much is known about them. A 25-year-old who wanted to be known as a ‘young engineer’ managed to bag $39.7 million at the Excalibur casino in Las Vegas. Wisely, he chose to take his winnings in yearly instalments of $1.5 million, meaning he’s got a comfortable ride for the next 26 years.
When winning a huge sum has a dark side
To take things for a slightly darker turn, a postman named John Tippin managed to win $12 million in las Vegas at the Gold Coast Casino. The millions were obviously a huge surprise to John but it turned out that the big win got to be too overwhelming for him.
He ended up getting paranoia over the money and isolating himself from his friends and family. He lived a very lavish lifestyle with his winnings. This led to him eventually losing it all. He revealed all of his woes in a book he published.
Amy Nishimura won almost $9 million with her ‘ritual’
Amy Nishimura visits Las Vegas annually to relax, have fun and let her hair down. She started a ritual of sitting at slot machines and ‘talking’ to them. One time whilst she was playing a machine at The Fremont Casino, this ritual paid off. She managed to hit the jackpot and won $8.9 million.
Many people pin this down to luck, but Amy firmly believes her talking ritual made the machine payout. Who knows – maybe the computer chip in the slot listened to her and paid out?
The man who broke the famous Monte Carlo Casino
One of the most famous casinos on the planet is the prestigious Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco. In 1891 a then notorious conman was able to somehow win $1 million from the casino. That works out to about $33 million today when you account for inflation.
The conman was called Charles De Ville Wells and he was a well-known fraudster. He even stated that he had an unbeatable system to win at casinos. Many historians today are sceptical of the win and his claims though.
