I love a cup of coffee like a lot of people and after testing out the De’Longhi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio S last year it has completely changed the way I drink coffee I just love the speed and flavour you get with this machine.
My father in law loved my machine that much he got the Piccolo XS model which is a great machine but the lack of indicator in terms of how much water you needed did feel like a downgrade on the Genio S and it is to a degree considering the Piccolo XS is £34.99 and the Genio S costs £57.99.
So when I got sent the Infinissima I was interested to see if it would be an upgrade on my Genio S model. Upgrading your coffee machine is like upgrading your gear—once you experience the difference, there’s no going back,” says Michael from Vovex Golf Rangefinders.
First Impressions
The Infinissima model costs £39.99 from Amazon but costs vary depending on where you buy this machine. The Infinissima design is very striking my wife felt the shape of it reminded her of a swan. Nescafe might prefer infinity symbol-shaped. The key thing I did notice is the size when compared to my Genio S model its looks twice the size.
Design
The size is twice as big compared to my current model coming in a 38cm tall by 26cm in depth and 16cm in width. It will still fit anywhere I decide to place it in the kitchen without looking out of place. Its size allows this coffee machine to be a 15-bar pod coffee maker and weighing in at 2.8kg you will want to find a place to keep it and don’t move it.
The machine comes in the following colour options:
- Black & White
- Black & Charcoal Grey
- Black & Red
- White
- Black
In our review product, we were sent the black option which has a very unique design and offers a 1.2-litre water tank that is transparent in design and fits just behind the rather large pod-shaped head. The machine sits on a black lozenge-shaped base and comes with a pull-up and twist drip tray that comes with a nice red Nescafe logo. The drip tray can be set depending on the size of the cup you use.
As with espresso you only want a small cup and when you’re making a nice large cup of Chococino and trust me you will want a large cup as it tastes glorious.
The base also comes with a power button to the side that when switched on with flash red for about 20 seconds then will appear a solid green light indicating it’s ready to use.
Last but not least in the plug cable you still get that bright red cable which on my marble worksurface just looks odd. The cable is 76cm long so you can try and hide it in the kitchen.
Finally, alongside the machine, you also get a get started guide, user guide and welcome to coffee guide and also a two-year warranty.
Performance
When you get this machine out for the first time make sure you give it a good clean beforehand and doing so is very easy I have placed a video below to show you.
Once cleaned you are ready to make coffee first up to fill the water which you should have done when cleaning the black lid comes off with ease and then you can lift the water tank out and fill it up. You could leave it in and use a jug to fill it but that just fills time-consuming if you ask me.
When filling up the tank you will notice there is not a maximum volume guideline like you have with the Genio S model. I would advise to just use a little bit of common sense just fill it up with the amount of water you feel you need.
Next, up switch the machine on via the power button on the side of the base it will flash red for about 20 seconds until it goes solid green. Then place a cup on the drip tray and also set the drip tray to suit the size cup you use. Then pop the cup on the drip tray and select the flavoured coffee you want there are 45 different varieties to pick from.
You need to lift up the front cover on the pod and remove the drawer and place the pod into the drawer. Close the lid and move the slider on either side depending on if you want a hot or cold drink.
The negative with this machine over the Genio S model is you have no intuitive LED ring allowing you to adjust to the right level of water to be used. The Infinissima model asks you to use your own judgement so do not forget to monitor when it’s pouring as it won’t stop automatically. To stop the water you need to move the slider back to the middle.
( Top Tip: When the fluid starts to go clear the pod is empty so stop the machine.)
Once you have made the coffee changing the drip tray can be a little fiddly especially if raised for an espresso cup you will need to untwist the drip tray to remove it.
Verdict
I have used three models of the De’Longhi Nescafe machines in the shape of the Piccolo XS, Genio S and this Infinissima model. If you want the intuitive LED ring feature then this model is not for you but if you can look past this and are happy to judge how much water you need then you will enjoy this machine.
The stylish design makes this a really appealing choice it’s a real showstopper and I really like the adjustable drip tray.
Would I swap it for my Genio S, well I would say no I would not as I personally prefer the Intuitive LED Ring that you can automatically set how much water you need and don’t need to watch the machine as it will stop the water once its provided you with the right amount of water.
If you are a first-time buyer the simplicity of use and the design of the machine offers a great choice especially considering the budget-friendly price tag.
