We have covered Edifier extensively, from the earbuds they produce to overhead headphones and even Bluetooth speakers. In this review, we were sent the Edifier X3 Lite, the brand’s entry-level earbuds, which cost £29.99 via Amazon.
First Impressions
The Edifier X3 Lite comes in two colours black or ivory and in this review we have been lucky to receive the ivory model.
The main features of these earbuds include the following:
- 6mm Driver
- AI Noise Cancellation Technology
- Bluetooth 5.3
- IP55 Waterproof
- Up to 6 hours of continuous listening paired with 24 hours in total battery life with the charging case included.
Unboxing
Edifier keeps the unboxing experience simple, and considering the price point, it’s not surprising. The Edifier X3 Lite comes in a simple cardboard box with a picture of the buds on the front and the main features on the back.
Inside the packaging you will find the following:
- Charging Case
- X3 Lite Buds
- Type-C charging cable
- 2 spare pairs of ear tips with an additional pair on the bud.
- User manual
Design
The Edifier X3 Lite is a pair of true wireless in-ear headphones with a lightweight plastic build of only 4g each bud and a matt finish and Edifier has done this to prevent scratches. I found the in-ear design to sit comfortably in my ears without the need to switch ear tips, but you are provided with additional sizes if required.
The earbuds come with a subtle bit of branding on the buds with small holes for the built-in microphone and an LED status light that lights up when they are in the charging case to indicate they are on charge.
The charging case is lightweight at only 25g and easily fits in your pocket; the matt plastic design does not feel very cheap considering the price. The case is simple in design from the LED indication on the front to the USB-C charging port at the rear.
Unfortunately, there is no charge status on the earphones or charging case but if you have the Edifier app you can have a display show up on my iPhone home screen. Finally opening and closing the case is easy to do and closing it comes with a loud clap. The case did pass our shake test and kept the buds in the charging case which is a good sign.
Moving to the buds themselves, the X3 lite comes with touch control, and the earbuds are fitted with a high-precision touchpad. The controls include playback, track control, and call control. What you will notice is that there are no controls for volume; this has to be done via your phone, and you cannot customize the controls.
Here is the full list of controls:
Now it won’t surprise the X3 Lite does not come with ANC what you do have is passive noise cancellation and this does a pretty good job of blocking out ambient noises around you. Edifier equips these buds with a CVC V.8.0 noise cancellation technology that reduces environmental noise providing high-quality passive noise isolation for a more immersive experience.
Finally, the Edifier X3 Lite comes with an IP55 rating these offer dust and water resistance allowing you to use them all day even in the gym.
Battery Life
The Edifier X3 Lite offers the user 6 hours of use on a single charge, which is not terrible when you consider the price point. The charging case will also offer an extra 18 hours of listening time giving you a full 24 hours of listening time. All are provided by a 120 mAh battery in this small charging case which charges from 0-100% in just 1 hour 30 minutes.
Audio Quality
The most important element in any pair of earbuds is the sound. I have been regularly using these for about 10 days now as my main pair of buds and considering they are the entry-level option they sound quite good.
The buds come with 6mm drivers that offer a decent soundstage in addition to 4 EQ presents via the Edifier App (Classic/Pop/Classical/Rock). The earbuds are also equipped with Qualcomm aptX technology and SBC codec and are connected using Bluetooth 5.3 with a 10-metre range all designed to aid the sound quality.
When testing the buds using a wide range of music the sound was ok but did leave something to be desired of. If you are a fan of bass look away now the low notes are there but could be improved massively. The rest of the soundstage performed well but it’s this lack of bass that I feel might put some users off.
Taking Calls
I used these recently to have a call with my son and also made a couple of work calls the built-in microphone performed well using the environmental noise cancelling (ENC) feature which allowed for a clear voice capture. This made making calls to be easy for others to hear you.
We did have an issue when making a call on WhatsApp, my son said I sounded like I was under water but switched to a normal phone call and that issue went away so could have just been the app.
Gaming
The Ediifer X3 Lite uses the Ediifier app and this includes a gaming mode (Low latency) of 60ms. This mode ensures sound and visuals are perfectly synchronized providing an immersive gaming experience.
Verdict
With the Edifier X3 lite they keep things very simple and you do not give features such as ANC and wireless charging that more expensive models come with. What you do get is a sleek design with a comfortable fit paired with a decent level of battery life and the sound quality that gets the job done but not in the most exciting manner. It’s useful that they are compatible with the Edifier app but the brand needs to look at the likes of Tozo when it comes to app development. I found the Edifier app to be a little on the basic side.
So overall if you are looking for a budget pair of earbuds with decent sound quality, and an IP rating that will get you through the day and work with you in the gym paid with a compact design. The Edifier X3 Lite for under £30 is well worth considering.
