GTA V Viewership Skyrockets from 12.8M to 58.2M in One Month

Over the past 365 days, the average number of GTA V concurrent viewers was 84,887. This made it sit at the third position after League of Legends (LoL) and Fortnite. LoL’s average number of viewers during the same period was 161,389 while Fortnite had 111,159. As the most established spectator eSports, LoL owes its popularity to its expansive competitive scene. In 2019, it had a total of over 1.12 billion viewership hours on Twitch, becoming the second game to ever surpass the 1 billion hour mark. Fortnite was the first one to do so in 2018.

On the other hand, GTA V got its eureka moment in March 2019. During the period between August 2017 and February 2019, it had maintained constant viewership hours. According to Newzoo, these ranged between 7 million and 12 million. But from 12.8 million viewing hours in February 2019, it shot up to 58.2 million hours in March 2019. This pushed it from 11th position to 3rd position in terms of viewership hours and numbers. The reason behind it was the introduction of role-playing courtesy of the NoPixel server FiveM mod.

In terms of peak viewers though, Fortnite holds a dominant position. On June 15, 2020, during its season-ending event, which was entitled ‘The Device’, it set a new record of 2.28 million viewers on Twitch according to Twitch Tracker. The new record broke LoL’s previous record of 1.7 million concurrent viewers, set during the 2019 World Championship.
