Now we are fast approaching the summer months listening to some music outside on a portable speaker sounds great to me. The most well-known Bluetooth speakers are the likes of Sony, JBL, Ultimate Ears, Bose and Edifier with price tags from budget-friendly to premium and everything in between.

In this review, we have been sent the Harman/Kardon Luna which comes in at £149 so it’s sitting in the premium price end and is available in two colours – Black or Grey. First Impressions of this speaker is just how powerful and versatile this speaker is.

The main features of this speaker include:

  • IP67 Water & Dust Resistance
  • Bluetooth 5.3 technology
  • Frequency Response: 60Hz-20kHz
  • Up to 12 Hours of Battery life

Design

When you take this speaker out of the fully recyclable packaging, the Harman Kardon Luna has a compact design that breaks away from the conventional aesthetics of other speakers on the market. The speaker has a minimalist design featuring a fabric-encased build (100% recycled polyester yarn) and an anodized aluminium top panel to help ensure long-lasting durability.

This fabric design gives the speaker a luxurious look making it fit in on any countertop. The speaker has the brand’s logo discreetly placed on the front of the speaker without taking up much attention.

The top of the speaker continues with that premium look and is made of anodized aluminium and it’s this panel which has all the controls. You will find in order the power button, volume decrease, play/pause, Volume increase and Bluetooth activation. 5 mini-LED lights indicate the battery status with a small USB-C charge port positioned on the rear.

Finally, the speaker is lightweight and portable measuring at only 21x 7.8 x 8cm (L x W x H) and the speaker only weighs in at 710 grams. This speaker is also IP67 rated making it resistant to water and dust proof meaning it’s perfect for the outdoors.

Battery Life

The Harman Luna offers the user incredible battery life with its 4800 mAh battery that gives you up to 12 hours of continuous playback as long as you’re on about 40% volume exceed that level and as expected the battery life is lower. This amount of battery life brings this speaker on par with the JBL Flip 6.

Sound Quality

One of the most important aspects of a portable speaker is the sound quality and the Harman/Kardon Luna shines in this area with its powerful but clear sound. This speaker comes with a 2-way system with two 48 x 90mm drivers and a 20mm tweeter for the highs. The power output of 25 watts RMS and 15 watts RMS respectively offers a powerful listening experience for use both outdoors and indoors.

The Frequency response range is 60 Hz to 20kHz what this means in terms of audio quality is you have a good balance of bass, midrange and treble that provides a premium experience considering its size and price point. I have been listening to a wide range of music over the last couple of weeks with this speaker and the Luna shows a solid sonic coherence with sub-bass coming through even when the volume is towards the max. I also found the midrange and treble tones in place to provide a balanced and enjoyable listening experience.

An example of this speaker performing well was when listening to “Lady Gaga’s Stupid Love”. You will notice the electrifying synths are reproduced with power. When you get to the chorus you will enjoy some exquisite shimmering in the highs and mids and at the same time, the vocals take on a life of their own, creating a good enveloping sensation.

Verdict

The Harman Luna Bluetooth speaker is a fantastic option that combines both a stylish look and standout performance. However, to get this combination it comes with a premium price of £149 it’s something to think about. What would make me invest in a portable speaker like this?  It’s the ability to deliver immersive sound without sacrificing the subtle details. This speaker delivers a power bass while maintaining the midrange and treble.

So, if you are looking for quality sound with a minimalist design this speaker scores high with us even if it’s a little pricy compared to its rivals.
