You might have a child who is at the age now where they want to explore technology and a kid’s smartwatch is the perfect device to keep tabs on your child’s location and activities and help them learn how to use a smartwatch in a fun way.
In this review, we look at the imoo Z7 which is the updated model of the imoo Z6 we reviewed last year. This smartwatch gives kids a taste when it comes to the main functions of a smartwatch such as calling, messaging and location sharing.
First Impressions/ Design
The imoo Z7 comes in two colours pink or blue and is available for £189 so regardless of if you have a son or daughter or both imoo has you covered.
Now on first appearances, there is not much difference from the previous Z6 model. The watch still comes with a modern sport-style aesthetics that features a 1.3-inch touchscreen display. The watch feels solid in build thanks to its aluminium body and high-quality silicone rubber strap. There is a single button on the side of the Z7 that acts as a power button.
The Z7 weighs 65 grams which is nice and lightweight for your child, and this adds to the comfort for long periods of use thanks to its well-designed straps and ergonomic fit. Imoo also consider how sturdy this device needs to be and has got an IPX8 rating which also comes with water resistance up to 20m depth.
Now imoo have continued to keep that unique design twist which is the lifting dial that allows camera usage. You will see right above the 1.3-inch display is a 2MP front camera which allows video calling functionality but there is more! There is a bigger 5MP rear camera tucked at the rear profile which becomes visible when you lift the dial from the frame. The two cameras allow your child to switch between front and back views during video calls via the proprietary app.
You will also see a SIM card tray under the sensor module which allows you to connect to make two-way calls using a SIM card from any of the following networks: Vodafone, O2, EE & Three.
What is under the bonnet?
Under the bonnet the imoo Z7 is powered by the Spreastrum W317 entry-level chipset paired with 128MB of RAM and 4GB of built-in memory which enables a smooth user experience.
The UI loaded on the Z7 is CaremeOS lite which provides a clean interface for convenient usage. The Z7 also comes with a range of sensors for tracking and monitoring such as GPS, GLONASS & LBS. The watch also has Wi-Fi network support but only on the 2.4Ghz network which could mean this device is not future-proof. The issue you might experience is networks operating on dual band 5GHz might not offer a smooth pairing experience.
Battery Life
Considering the Z7 smartwatch is designed for kids in mind it will not surprise you that you are provided with a 740 mAh integrated battery. Give the Z7 a full charge and standard usage, expect this smartwatch to deliver almost three days of charge.
Connectivity
The Z7 smartwatch comes with a wide range of connectivity options from 4G support via the SIM card, Wi-Fi (limited to 2.4 GHz networks and messaging capabilities via the imoo app.
Features
The biggest feature of the Z7 is the two-way calling and two-way video chat option. This is done using the 2MP front or 5MP rear camera both of which offer a good image and video quality. The front camera will double up for video calling while with the rear camera, your child can show the surroundings easily, This feature can help during an emergency.
The Z7 smartwatch also supports messaging you will need to download the imoo app for texting and leaving voice messages. You as a parent also can manage contacts, set call restrictions and if you want to take monitoring to the next level initiate monitoring right from the companion app.
What you will notice is this device does not support third-party apps such as WhatsApp. The app is also essential for two-way voice and video calling and is widely available on the likes of Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store.
The imoo Z7 also provides your child with a range of health-measuring features. The Z7 comes with a PPG heart rate monitor and an air pressure sensor that can keep track of your heart rate, blood oxygen levels & body temperature and even mood. All these stats are compiled seamlessly on the app for the parent to see.
Finally, the imoo Z7 also comes with an IPX8 waterproof rating meaning this watch can handle the splashes and spills that your child is likely to offer.
Verdict
The imoo Z7 smartwatch certainly impresses when it comes to the hardware it’s a well-built smartwatch that would appeal to kids, I would say from the age of 7+. Regarding improvements, the imoo app gets the main jobs done such as calls, messaging, health and location tracking but the app feels a little unpolished a more intuitive interface would make it easier for parents to navigate. I would also improve the brightness of the display if imoo optimized the display for better visibility in various lighting conditions would enhance the user experience.
Overall, the imoo Z7 works as an excellent first smartwatch for your child, allowing you to keep in communication with them and monitor their activity and health. I think it ticks many boxes for a parent who wants to keep an eye out for their child growing up fast.
If you want to invest in a versatile and reliable smartwatch for your child at £189, the imoo Z7 might feel a little expensive but worth considering.
