The latest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system is set to bring a host of exciting new features to iPhones and iPads everywhere. iOS 14.5 is currently undergoing beta testing, which judging by previous updates, means the final public release will not be far off.

Discussing iOS 14.5, Andrew Cartledge, mobile expert at online smartphone retailer, Mobiles.co.uk, has revealed his most highly anticipated features:

Apple Watch facial ID integration

A new integration feature will allow users to unlock their iPhone using Face ID on their Apple Watch, with better recognition technology improving the ability to do so with a face mask on. When used, the Apple Watch will send a gentle vibration to your wrist to let you know your iPhone has also been unlocked.

Over 200 new emojis

It’s always interesting to see which new emojis make the cut and iOS 14.5 has some great updates. There are 217 new emojis with extensive additions for skin tone variations on the ‘kiss’ and ‘couple with heart’ emoji sets.

Set your own default music player

Previously, Apple Music would be the default music player when asking Siri to play something, however, with iOS 14.5 you will be able to select whichever player you like, such as Spotify.

Support for next gen gaming controller

For keen mobile gamers, this is perhaps one of the most exciting additions. The new iOS update will provide support for PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers, so gamers will be able to get the best mobile gaming experience, playing on their iPhones or iPads using their physical console controllers.

How to download iOS 14.5

When the final version is released, users should receive notifications telling them iOS 14.5 is ready for download. Alternatively, simply navigate to Settings > General > Software Update.

Andrew adds: “iOS 14.5 will bring more of the noticeable and exciting updates to iPhone and iPad users, compared to previous versions which were more focussed on background updates like bug fixes and stability improvements.

“Although the public beta is available to download now, we’d recommend waiting for the final version to be released, as you’ll get the most optimal version. If you do wish to download the beta however, we would strongly advise making a full backup of your device first.”
