If you are a vlogger or mobile creator and have seen the news of Joby releasing their new range of wavo mics you might be considering a tripod to use them with.
In this review, we have been testing the Joby Podzilla which is an alternative to the more well known Joby GorillaPod. The Joby Podzilla could be said to be an upgrade. As if you are a budding photographer there may be situations where you need a secure hold and the GorillaPod legs won’t fix on surfaces that are too smooth or thin.
Welcome the Joby Podzilla that solves that issue. It comes in two main sizes medium and large. The large only comes in grey but the medium model comes in Grey, Yellow, Teal & Red. They are currently available for £36.95 available from Joby.com
Design
The Podzilla is unlike any tripod we have used to date as with a traditional tripod that has rigid legs that can only be adjusted in length and splay. The GorillaPod uses a three-legged design that provides great flexibility and can be wrapped around most things.
The legs on the Podzilla has upgraded from that of the GorillaPod they now come with flexible aluminium rods that are wrapped in a rubber grippy material.
You will need to add a little force to bend the legs due to the aluminium build but they will hold their position much better and have even more flexibility meaning you can connect them to much thinner objects for that perfect picture. The legs each measure at just under 25cm per leg.
The legs on the Podzilla features a pattern of flexible ridges which when connected to a surface held on very tightly. I have tested these on a number of items from a tree branch to railings on Southend Pier and they held on with ease and had no movement when connected.
In terms of the Podzilla it also comes with an adjustable smartphone mount I used it with my iPhone 12 and it fit perfectly. It will hold other devices up to 2.2 pounds. The large version can support devices up to 5.5 pounds but if you are an iPhone user like me then the medium model will be fine.
The included smartphone mount attaches firmly to the standard tripod mount screw and keeps your phone sturdy in use. The mount comes with rubber-coated grips to accommodate something like an iPhone 13 Max Pro and the mount also has that swivel joint meaning you can take both a portrait or landscape picture with your phone.
The Podzilla mount is connected to the legs using a socket joint that can be simply adjusted with the press of a button and it works really well when using a smartphone but something heavier might bring concerns.
Verdict
If you are a budding photographer or enjoy creating video content then Joby is the brand you need to consider. If you already have the GorillaPod I might be inclined to tell you to keep using it then upgrade. However, the Podzilla is designed for the beginner in the world of vlogging or a photographer at a semi-professional level and wants a next level tripod.
It’s designed for those who want to use their smartphone or GoPro and the medium-sized Podzilla is ideal for that type of user. It’s simple to use with very little set-up and the legs grip really tight on most surfaces.
My only concern is the durability of this device over time as shaping them legs on different surfaces could weaken the legs but until I have tested these over a longer period of time I am unable to comment. I expect the Podzilla to last many years considering who made it.
Overall the Podzilla is of excellent quality and well built it’s also lightweight adding to its versatility. The legs allow you to mount to anything and even use the podzilla on an uneven surface and it would not fall over. Considering the cost of only £36.95 it’s well worth the investment for taking that incredible image or video content.
