You may recall we have reviewed the Nanoleaf Shapes before and you are right they are still on my wall glowing and are fantastic decorations that can be fully personalised for any room.
First Impressions
The Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes come in either triangles or hexagons (No Mini Triangles) and they come in black instead of the traditional white to celebrate Nanoleaf’s 10th anniversary what we have here is a limited edition offering so if this is something that has taken your eye go for it now!
Cost-wise the Nanoleaf Ultra Black triangles 9-panel starter kit is £143.99 or the hexagons come in at the same price. The expansion kits (3 panels) cost £39.99. You will notice the black option is slightly more expensive but not by much.
Design/Setup
If you have read our previous review on the Nanoleaf Shapes no need to continue as the main difference is the colour apart from that it’s the same product.
However, if you are new to the product the Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes are 100mm x115mm (HxW) and each panel connects to the next. What you will also notice is the mounting plates, wire and controller are all black to add to the overall style. The only negative is the black cable will stand out more on a white wall.
What you will also notice is you can actually link the white and black models together if you want to in order to create an even more sleek design like what I have done below.
The set-up is very simple to mount as the mounting plates all come with double-sided sticky pads. So to get the design right I would plan where each panel is going and mark them on the wall with a pencil first. You can also use the Nanoleaf app if you want to as it has a layout assistant if you are stuck for space.
Once you have mounted give them a quick wipe as the black option can be a bit of a fingerprint magnet. If you control them via the app the fingerprint issue won’t be a problem but if you use the controller you might want to wipe them down every so often.
Performance
The Nanoleaf Shapes just like the Nanoleaf Lines are some of the brightest RGB LEDs I’ve used but and did think the white option might have been brighter but this was not the case. They also look great when switched off. The black option is a little dimmer but you do find the contrast and saturation are much better.
Using the Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes can be used by the built-in controller that is connected to the side of one of the panels. There is also the app available on IOS, Android or PC. You will need to use the app to link to Wi-Fi and then the app allows you to set up scenes, animate colours or make the panels react to music or mirror your gaming device or TV.
The last feature to discuss is the touch-reactive they flicker when you press against them. You can even use the Shapes to play games like a style of whack a Mole.
Verdict
The Nanoleaf Ultra Black shapes offer some of the best RGB wall lights on the market however, the cost could put some buyers off. The Ultra Black Shapes are simply a work of art even when off that will get people talking I have them in the background of a video call and it is a real conversation starter.
