Looking for a budget-friendly record player with features such as Bluetooth and the vital inclusion of the Audio-Technica cartridge provides the user with a way to listen to the classics.
Majority Audio is well known for its budget-friendly but award-winning soundbars and speakers such as the recently reviewed DB80 Bluetooth speakers. However, they have now added a turntable to their range of products let me introduce you to the Majority Moto.
First Impressions
When Majority Audio sent me the Moto, I love music but did not own any vinyl nor did I know the difference between a 33, 45 or a 78. So, I had to call in the father-in-law who lucky for me had such a record collection.
The main difference I found out was that 45s are more popular with DJs as they travel faster than the 33 format. This allows for more waveforms to be squeezed into the format which equates to a superior audio quality. The 78s are used for albums, but we did not have any to try in this review only 33s & 45s.
You will even notice vinyl is becoming just as popular as digital streaming. Why well listening to an album/single on vinyl is just a better way to appreciate what the artist wanted to you hear. The music just sounds more crisp and clear.
The Majority Moto is priced at £89.95 which did provide me with a small concern could they produce excellent sound quality while offering it at a budget-friendly price?
Let’s take a deeper look the Majority Moto comes with Bluetooth 5.3 capabilities which is a real bonus as the built-in speakers are not great. So, I connected the Moto to the majority DB80 Bluetooth speakers I have and bingo that sound is massively improved.
To connect simply set the record player to PH (Phono) and it will display a red LED on the front of the Moto. Then on the side press the BT Out button located on the right side, and you are connected.
The Build
When I took this out of the box, I found the tonearm to be sturdy and but there is no auto-return option you might expect on other record players. When the record has finished playing there is an on/off button which stops it automatically or you can just simply let it play into infinity. This option feels like the better way as it prevents any danger of wrecking of the needle.
You may also notice the Majority Moto also has a precision-engineered dampening platter and 4 feet at the base to minimize vibrations from outside sources. You will also find a Majority branding slip mat which works well when playing a 33 and you do not want that plain plastic deck beneath.
Other features of this turntable include Bluetooth 5.3 allowing you to play music via your phone through the Moto speakers personally I do not see a benefit of this function at all.
The turntable also gives you an AUX In option at the rear and on the side, there is also a USB slot which is quite useful as you can record from it. You can get those old records onto digital, and it has a split button you can push between tracks for your recordings. Useful is some of these vintage tracks are not available on the likes of Spotify.
Performance
As mentioned, the Majority Moto gives you the chance to listen to a range of vinyl from the 33 to the 78 records. This is what I feel makes this record player stand out from the crowd. The other standout feature is the audio-technica AT3600L needle otherwise known as a cartridge. This partnership prevented that plastic vibe at all and provided an excellent all-encompassing sound reproduction.
Now the Majority Moto comes with small integrated speakers but after a quick test, it was clear you need to use Bluetooth speakers. I invited the father-in-law round with his collection which was mainly from the 70’s and 80’s with my favourite record being “Meatloaf Bat out of Hell” which was on a 45. When we put that needle on the record, and it started to spin the scale of the production shone through the speakers.
Verdict
The Majority Moto Turntable offers excellent value for money and shows why Majority are making waves in the audio market. The inclusion of the Audio-Technica AT3600L needle/cartridge is vital as it gives you excellent quality which delivers that clean and crisp sound.
Majority keep the design simple meaning it will fit perfectly as part of your home entertainment setup and allow you to listen to the current music of today as well as immerse yourself into the classics of days gone by.
At under £100, this is well worth getting as a gift for that music-loving member of the family.
