The Mickey & Friends 7-inch Children’s tablet costs £99 from the Pebble Gear Website
OVERALL RATING: 4.7 out of 5.0 stars
With Christmas coming up you might be looking for a gift for your son or daughter or maybe you have a niece that loves Disney as I have.
Pebble Gear has brought out the next of their tablets designed for kids after the Frozen 2 & Toy Story 4 models this time around they have released a Mickey & Friends version. This 7-inch tablet comes with a rugged protective case as let’s face if you have kids you know they will drop everything at some point.
The key features of this tablet are:
- Kid Safe
- Works with or without Wi-Fi
- Rugged Design
- Camera
- Parental Control
- Anti Blue Light
- Up to 4 users
This tablet will be the first tablet for a child aged 3+ so parents need to pick the right one and be safe knowing they have control over what your child is doing on the app. The Mickey & Friends tablet allows your little ones to learn and have fun at the same time.
Design
This tablet is an android based 7-inch screen that offers 1024 x600 resolution. The tablet runs using a 1.3Ghz dual-core processor and comes with 16GB of storage but with the pre-loaded apps you actually get a little less space then mentioned. This is finished with that child protective case.
On the right side of the tablet the case is cut out to show the Power button, 3.5mm headphone jack, Micro USB charge port, Volume control and SD Card slot. This SD card slot allows for up to 128GB if you require additional storage.
On the back of the tablet, you have a cut out for the speaker and camera which has a lens on the front & back of the tablet. This will allow your child to take less random pictures on your phone and more on their tablet. The image quality is not to bed considering it’s a child’s tablet.
Moving back to the case for a second ita rugged bumper case that will coupe with drops you expect a kid to do with a tablet. My niece is 6 years old and that tablet did fall on the floor a few times and worked perfectly without any noticeable damage. The case does not have a stand meaning it will have to be held by the user or it will need to be propped up. This seems like a missed trick from Pebble Gear.
Performance
Set-up of this table was quite a simple process and did not take that long to do. Once you connect to the Wi-Fi you need to request an activation code. I found this a little annoying as I did not get the code sent until the following morning. This could have just been an issue I was having personally rather than the device itself. Once you have the code you’re ready to fly.
Software-wise you are given a number of preloaded Disney apps 3 different games: Search, Pop & Tap.
All 3 games my niece really did enjoy and helped with cognitive development. As you had to find things, match spheres to similar colours or tapping fast-moving objectives. These games are great fun and even I wanted to play them.
What I felt was the standout of this device is the 10 ebooks in the range about Mickey and friends and my niece loved these. As the tablet even read these stories out to here I guess that was a good job as the text on the pages was just so small. When the tablet reads the story the words light up which helps with her reading.
This tablet also comes with 1 full years subscription to the game store junior that offers over 500 games and apps for your little ones. The main categories are:
- Play
- Books
- Media
- Learn
- Newest
- Editors Choice
- Best Rated
Then apps are categorised under age – 0-3 years, 4-7 years, 8+ years. You also get some retro games like Pac Man Racing. My niece also found a frozen game so you have something from everyone.
Now you might be thinking this tablet got so much on it how will I get the little one off the tablet. Simple this tablet offers parental controls which allows you to set screen time limits and also set up individual windows of usage. It’s great to plan time for usage over the week and weekend. Want to give your child more time you can increase screen time by 10 minutes increments or set it to unlimited use.
The Parents area also provides stats related to usage and breaks the time they have played, read, watched or learnt. This offers the parent an insight into what the child has been doing on the tablet.
This tablet also comes with a web browser that also comes with parental controls allowing you to set sites they can view, remove the URL and prevent the creation of bookmarks instead.
Would I buy this for my kids?
I would have to say it’s great fun for kids to get the first step into technology my niece loved the games loaded on the tablet (So did I). She also enjoyed the narrated books and her mother was impressed with the parental controls. However, We do have some negatives, some of the books are not narrated which is a shame. You do not get a stand which means you either will have to hold the tablet or prop it up. You will also notice you do not have an option for Disney+ app meaning you won’t be able to watch any Disney films. The last negative is the fact the SD Card slot is wide open meaning its likely something might get stick in the hole of it could catch crumbs or dribble.
Moving on to the good points, the home screen is very easy to move around and very kid-friendly and what I like most is the parental controls being able to control how long my child would be using the tablet and also an understanding of what they are doing on the tablet.
If you are looking for a 1st tablet for a Disney loving child at £99 it’s well worth investing in. Want to add even more protection to the tablet you can buy a screen buddy for £14.99.
