The creators of the Xbox line and a wide range of smartphones, Microsoft, have made a strong move with the purchase and acquisition of gaming development and interactive entertainment content publisher giant Activision Blizzard Inc.

A move that no doubt brings elation to Xbox fans and potential worry for PlayStation fans, with a staple classic of the gaming community such as Overwatch and Call of Duty being now under the ownership of Xbox. This acquisition poses several questions from fans; Will Activision, Blizzard and King games now be only exclusive to Xbox players and Microsoft users? Will the Xbox Game Pass get a substantial upgrade on the back of this purchase?

Microsoft purchase of Activision

Although I’m certain all these questions will be answered in due course, for now, we must wait, with this transaction still not being fully completed. However, we can make some predictions based off the history of games console developers purchasing game developers. Xbox only recently added Bethesda to their haul of games developers, creators of games such as Fallout and cult classic Skyrim. The effect of this acquisition led to many benefits for Xbox players, with Skyrim receiving a Series X/S upgrade, along with Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 being added to the now stacked Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft's recent purchase of Activision

Skyrim and Fallout are also now only exclusive to Xbox, meaning PlayStation users may not be able to play future Call of Duty, Overwatch and any other new titles from Activision or Blizzard. As for King Games, we could expect Candy Crush Saga to become exclusive to Microsoft phones, however, I don’t see this happening, with Candy Crush having so many users worldwide, it would be unwise to take away so many users.

I think this applies to the console games too so PlayStation fans don’t cry just yet, there may be some hope for you. This is what Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft had to say following the move:

Microsoft's recent purchase of Activision

Although this doesn’t directly say that Activision Blizzard games will not be Xbox exclusives, it appears the two gaming giants Sony and Microsoft are talking in a bid to find some sort of common ground in which they can compromise, in the best interests of the gamers out there who use their systems religiously.

One thing we know for certain is this is a fantastic move by Microsoft, business-wise. This will undoubtedly bring large, large revenue to the company, whether they make the newly acquired games exclusive or not. If they are made exclusive, I can see diehard fans transferring to Xbox from PlayStation, and if they are not made exclusive, Microsoft will make money from PlayStation and Xbox copy sales, making it a win-win for Microsoft.
