The Realme Watch S – £74.99 via realme.com
Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars – 4.5 Stars
This year more of us have got out and have started to get fit so what a better way to monitor our progress than with a Smartwatch. In this review, we got sent the Realme Watch S which is an upgrade on what Parent company Oppo produced.
The Watch S costs £74.99 and comes with 1.3 inch LCD display and comes with all the features you come to expect like music playback, watch face changes, plus tracking options for your steps and also a sleep monitor. The Watch S also offers health monitoring such as heart rate and blood oxygen measurements.
Unfortunately this watch still only works on Android and there is no built-in GPS which means you have to use your phone’s GPS.
Design
Realme have gone for a round watch face which looks really nice on your arm. You get a 47mm aluminium case that measures at 12mm thick and weighs in at 48g. The watch comes with a silicone strap but allows you to take the strap off and place it with a new strap from a different company.
The Watch comes with a 360 x 360 LCD touchscreen display that offers maximum brightness and good viewing angles. The watch also comes with Gorilla Glass to offer that extra level of protection. Also on the watch, you have two physical buttons the top button bringing up the menu and the bottom button can be used to provide quick access to the feature you use the most.
The watch does come with an IP68 rating meaning it’s water-resistant but if you’re wanting a smartwatch to monitor your swimming this watch is not for you. However, the IP rating does protect your watch from rain when out and about.
Performance
To use this watch and to record the monitoring you need to download the realme link app. Unfortunately as mentioned the app can only be downloaded on an Android phone which does limit the numbers of users who would buy this watch. However, If you have a realme mobile phone it’s not an issue. I downloaded this app using the Realme 7 5G. This did require permission to access your location.
Once set up the in-built software was very easy to use. You swipe left and right to see things like activity tracking and the weather. You can swipe down for any messages and swipe up for all the apps available.
Also on the Watch S it allows you to change the watch face you have up to 100 different faces and it’s very easy to change the face simply press down on the screen and then swipe to pick the watch face. You can also download new faces via the Link app.
In terms of features on the watch, it also offers you the chance to control the music your playing via your phone and also you can bring up your camera on your phone via the watch. I still find this feature a little pointless but am sure some people will find it a useful feature to have. Most of the app when testing this watch worked as you would expect. However, I did find text messages and Whatsapp messages would appear a little short making it difficult to read.
Fitness
The most important part about having a smartwatch is its fitness tracking and the Realme Watch S does not disappoint. This watch comes with a 3-axis accelerometer sensor that tracks everything from your workouts to step tracking and even monitors your sleep pattern. You have a heart rate sensor that brings features like continuous monitoring which provides alerts if your heart rate is too high when exercising. This is paired with the blood oxygen measurements to offer a more in-depth understanding of your fitness.
Your tracking can all be monitored from the app and it shows you total steps taken, calories burnt and how many hours you have been active. You can also set up inactivity alerts as well as when it’s time to drink some water.
In terms of other tracking activities, there are 16 modes that cover a wide range of activities such as running, cycling, strength training and football. I used this to monitor my cycling and it was decent in terms of offering stats such as distance and duration. However some sports such as football you only get the duration and heart rate data I would have liked for more data on the activity I have just completed.
Battery life
The Battery life I have really been impressed with this watch comes with a 390mAh battery and realme tells you it will last up to 15 days. I have been using this watch for the last two weeks and it still got 30% battery life. If you do hit into that low battery stage there is a power-saving mode if you are out and about. When it’s time to recharge you have a magnetic charging base that sits perfectly on the back of the watch case.
Verdict
The realme Watch S is a massive improvement on the original offering. It looks great and offers an attractive design you can switch straps to add some extra style. The battery life on this smartwatch is fantastic I have been using this regularly for the last 2 weeks and it’s still going. This watch offers decent tracking options but compare it to other smartwatches and the results may provide some questions over the accuracy of the results when you have hit the gym or gone for a run but the step monitor works perfectly.
However, this watch is not perfect it only allows you to use the watch on an android device and also the IP rating only offers water resistance and its not waterproof so you won’t be able to monitor your swimming activity. Also, your unable to make payments using your watch like you might have done with the Apple Watch Series 6.
Apart from that if you’re looking for a smartwatch packed with features and you have an Android phone it’s not a bad option to consider. The Watch is sleek in design and offers fitness tracking without making the watch feel complicated. The Link app ads some great statistics. Under the £100 mark you get a well-built watch the Realme Watch S will satisfy your needs and give you a taste into smartwatches.
