Skullcandy hope that with the joy of music they can offer support to mental health charity To Write Love On Her Arms
The Skullcandy Indy Evo come in two shades of purple or what Skullcandy call Lucky Purple. They also use a mix of purple and Orange to create that truly unique look. You also get a Limited Edition Lucky You Poster as seen in the featured image above.
Design
Moving to the buds the Skullcandy Indy Evo are a pair of truly wireless headphones that are in the earbud-style similar design to what you would get with a pair of Airpods 2. The Indy Evo offer a real alternative for a more budget-friendly price.
The Indy Evo is designed for those who wish to use it for fitness; they do this with the IP55 rating and ear tips that offer a better fit when you are working in the gym. Inside the box, you also get 2x pairs of ear tips offering an option for these who need a better fit. You also get a USB-A to USB-C charge cable.
These buds come in a trendy looking charge case it’s a nice size that will fit with ease in your pocket. The case is a similar design to that of the Apple Airpod case with rounded edges and comes with that Skullcandy logo on the front as well as 4 LED lights which indicate how much battery life comes in the case. The only downside of the case is it’s not QI compatible so no wireless charging.
When you open the case you will see the cutout where the buds fit and the buds have magnetic ends to keep them in the case. On the shake test they stayed in the case and did not offer any risk they might fall out.
Moving on to the buds they are designed for fitness in mind they offer IP55 rating meaning if your in the middle of a sweaty gym session your earbuds will be fine. You even get Skullcandy Fearless Use Promise that if required they will replace at a discount. You also get silicone stabiliser eargels to achieve a good fit.
I found the buds very comfortable for most of my time using these buds and did not suffer ear fatigue. I found the fit of the buds also provides a passive noise cancelling which did reduce about 60% of external sound.
The buds are made of plastic but at the price point it’s not an issue and they are controlled using the touch-sensitive controls just simply tap the image of the Skullcandy for the controls such as play/pause/ track control and volume control. You can also answer calls via these buds.
The touch-sensitive pads are very responsive, the actual controls are very intuitive. For example, a single tap means you increase or decrease the volume and a double-tap in the left bud brings up the smart assistant. These are just some of the controls but like I say they are very easy to use. Below is a chart of all the controls:
The Skullcandy Indy Evo come with Bluetooth 5.0 which most Bluetooth devices are these days. You will also find out that these buds allow solo bud use if you only wanted just the one bud in at a time.
How do they sound?
If you have used Skullcandy in the past if you have not go download the Skullcandy app you won’t forget it as I feel the app is very useful as it allows you to use the Ambient mode but you can also give you the buds a double-tap and 2-second hold to turn this on.
You also get 3 EQ modes Music, Movie & Podcast. In testing, I would say I preferred to use the Movie Mode it offers a strong base as well as offering a balanced sound. If you switch to the Podcast mode it cuts the bass and offers more of a mid-range offering and improved the vocals in a podcast. Finally, you have the music mode and if am honest stick with the Movie mode and this mode just makes songs feel flat.
I also mentioned the headphones also offer an Ambient mode and these are useful when you want to listen to music but also hear what is happening around you. I found it quite useful but not sure how much I would use it when you can just use a solo bud when listening to music.
Overall the sound quality is great and this is due to the fact they have toned down the lows but mids and highs offer the pretty clear vocals. When you listen to something like the Greatest Showman album. The vocals come out nice and loud which is great when you are signing your heart out.
These headphones also offer a built-in mic which when I tested it I found the experience more than acceptable and I came across clear without any muffle and the quality was not affected and the person I was speaking to sounded great. I could not fault these.
Battery Life
The Battery life offered 30 hours of battery life that includes the battery life stored in the case. The buds give you 6 hours of use in a single run but the case stores that extra 24 hours. Recharge time with the buds in the case you will get a full charge in 1 hour but to fully charge both the buds and the case that will take 2 hours. Skullcandy does offer a rapid charge option for the buds 10 minutes charge will give you 2 hours charge.
Would I buy them?
The answer is a very easy Yes!
Not only are you getting something limited edition you also doing your part to help the fight against mental health. Not only that these buds look and sound great and with features like the solo bud use, Smart Assistant and some clever tech in the shape of built-in Tile tracking which helps you find the buds if you have misplaced them.
They are perfect for that gym session due to the ergonomic design and IP55 rating making them perfect for the gym. I found the battery life average but for the everyday user, they will find this acceptable. So if you’re looking for a pair of earbud design headphones but with that limited edition style that will help these who suffer from mental health at £89.99, they are a good alternative to Apple Airpods 2.
