The True Wireless headphone market offers a lot of choices and with the likes of Sony, Jabra and Sennheiser leading the way and offering alternatives to the Apple Airpods Pro.
In this review, we have had a chance to try out the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 which cost £239 and on first impressions, they look really good and on testing these out they sound fantastic.
I have to say when they arrived I was a little concerned as I have previously tested the first attempt from Sennheiser back at the start of 2019 when I was reviewing for my previous employer and remember I did not get on well with them. I found they fell out too much I even nearly lost a bud on a train journey to London. So hopefully you might understand why I was a little cautious when the momentum 2 arrived.
Am pleased to Fast forward a few years and the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 took all my concerns away they fit really well which adds to the overall enjoyment. They have also improved on the last attempt with the inclusion of ANC which was not an option in the first attempt.
Design
If you compare the Sennheiser Momentum 2 to the original design they look very similar as you can see in the picture below.
They have only made some very small changes for example the momentum 2 have now reduced the size of the buds (2mm Smaller) making them fit in my ears like a glove even better than my go-to pair the Jabra Elite 85t. I found I now had a really good seal that offered that passive noise cancellation. I also found that slight change allowed me to use these for hours without any ear fatigue something that can’t be said for the original pair.
Also in the box you get given 4 different sizes of silicone ear tips just in case you need slightly bigger or smaller tips to what is already on the bud and changing them over was really easy which is not something you can say for a number of true wireless brands on the market. You also get the USB-C charging cable and the charging case which looks very similar to what you got with the original pair.
The buds apart from the size factor look nearly identical and that is because they basically are. They come in two colours Black & White and in this review, we have the white pair which I feel look really sleek and stylish even the gold plated charging pins add to the overall look.
You get the touch controls as you did before that offer the normal controls like Play/Pause, Track control, Volume and smart assistant. However, they also come with Ambient noise control and ANC which I will discuss later in the review.
The Momentum 2 also come with a smart pause which is something I have with my Jabra pair. However, I felt the smart pause on the Sennheiser worked even better. These buds are also IPX4 rated meaning they are perfect for hitting the gym or doing some outdoor exercise especially in this current pandemic where we are all doing more exercise.
The charging case is the same design-wise as the previous model. The buds have 7 hours battery life and the charge stored in the case now totals 21 hours.
The pair (White Version) we are reviewing come in the case with a grey weaved finish with a white plastic lining around the lid. At the back of the case, you have that USB-C charging port with a small LED next to it. Also on that panel at the back is a small button when pressed it causes the LED to appear Red, Orange or Green depending on the level of battery you have left I really like this little feature as it gives me an indication of the amount of battery life available.
Features
The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 has active noise cancellation which might not feel like a new feature in terms of other premium models on the market and you would be right. However, it’s the quality of the ANC that Sennheiser has mastered. Turn the ANC on and goodbye to any unwanted noise it works very well I would say they sit in the top 3 ANC earbuds on the market.
Switching on that ANC on can be done using the touch-sensitive controls but it can also be activated via the Sennheiser control app. This control app like the Jabra version allows you to customise the controls. The app also shows battery life but as a total figure, unlike the Jabra app that shows you the battery life per bud. The app also offers a transparent hearing (Ambiant mode) and also comes with an equalizer for adjusting the treble & bass.
Other features include the use of Bluetooth 5.1 and these earbuds also support the aptX codec allowing you to listen to Hi-Res Audio.
Audio Performance
I have been testing these buds for the last few weeks and have listened to a range of different styles of music. The Sennheiser Momentum 2 perform really well they do this with the 7mm dynamic drivers which offers a deep bass with a clear detailed treble and natural mids.
My go-to tracks for testing the audio quality is Alice Murton’s No Roots and momentum 2 plays this track as you might expect with power and precision with lots of space for the drums in the background. The soundstage for the guitar solo really did sound refine which adds to the joy of this track.
Moving to the high frequencies they are composed more than any pair of buds I have ever tested. They also offer an impressive amount of detail regardless of the style of music you want to listen to. The mids and lows are also very good they offer a great level of control and when listening to a bass-heavy track they sound really powerful and precise.
They also work well when watching a film on Netflix or Sky Go and recently I watched the new Justice League Film (Yes it is 4 hours long) and the explosions sound really impactful and the vocals are crystal clear and loud and added to the pure joy this film offers.
Battery life
The Sennheiser Momentum 2 offer a larger battery than Sennheiser first attempt they now offer 7 hours in the buds with a further 21 hours that come from the charging case. This is a welcomed improvement from the 4 hours of playtime in the buds and eight hours from the case in the original design. This improvement made me very happy as they really do last forever I have only had to charge these once in 3 weeks.
Verdict
What can I say about the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 they are a fantastic pair of buds and Sennheiser has really done its homework and improved every aspect we complained about with the first attempt.
They have made the buds a little smaller meaning you don’t get ear fatigue and they have increased the battery life and also made small improvements on the sound quality that was also very good. At £239 I think you are getting one of the best pairs of true wireless earbuds on the market.
You even get ANC which was not available in Sennhisers first attempt and it’s not perfect but it’s close. If you’re looking for a pair of buds that are suitable when listening to some music while at work, on the beach or even in the gym when they reopen. These will put a smile on the audiophile among us as well as those who just want a great pair of earbuds.
Well done Sennheiser and I can’t wait for what is in store for the future.
