Bookshelf Speakers have recently become a must-have for most home office setups as who does not enjoy some music to make the day disappear faster when you are working all day.
We have reviewed several Bookshelf Speakers from the likes of Pioneer & Edifier to just name a few and the speakers always offer excellent sound quality via a wired or even Bluetooth connection. They also come with a little remote control that allows you to change the EQ presets and adjust the sound profiles.
What you will also notice regardless of the brand time is taken when you consider the workmanship and this can be said for the Sharp CP-SS30 that we have reviewed in this article.
First Impressions
The Sharp CP-SS30 are available in two colours:
- Black
- Brown (Mahogany)
In this review, we have been lucky to receive a set of brown bookshelf speakers and they do not look that bad on my desk.
The key Features of these speakers include the following:
- 60W RMS 2-way active speakers within engineered wood housing for superior sound reproduction.
- Bluetooth 5.0, USB Playback, Optical, AUX & RCA Inputs.
- 5 EQ Presets and custom bass and treble adjustment
Unboxing
As you might expect the speakers arrived in a large cardboard box with cardboard inserts to protect the speakers. All the packaging was fully recyclable which is a big tick.
Inside the box contained 2x speakers, a remote control, a user guide, and 2x power cables (1x for the UK Market & 1x for the EU market). You are also provided with the RCA Cable, AUX cable and a speaker cable to connect both speakers together.
Sharp also provides the user with a remote control that is made of plastic and has the volume, bass and treble controls as well as buttons such as music playback, and mute. The controller also allows you to switch between connected devices and EQ settings.
Design/Build
Each speaker is made of wood and comes in the two colours I have mentioned. We have the brown model and the first thing you will say is the workmanship is a thing of beauty. The speakers have an elegance about them and are protected by anti-slip rubber feet at the base. They also come in a size that won’t take up too much room (158 x 248 x 190 WxHxD for each speaker)
You are then provided with that speaker cable that has been wrapped in a transparent material with one of the cables marked in red and the other clear so when you plug into the rear of the speakers it makes it easier to know which ends connect to each speaker.
In terms of ports, everything can be found on the left speaker with the right only having the port to connect it to the left speaker. The Left speaker consists of multiple outputs such as the RCA Cable, AUX cable and a speaker cable. There is also a USB port that allows you to play music in MP3 format if you have an external hard drive for example with some of the old classic playlists stored.
Flip the speakers around and the left speaker has the volume control which also doubles as a switch to change modes this is situated on the right side of the left speaker with a small area for the LED situated on the left side of the speaker. The LED indicates which mode you are on. (If you are looking for the power switch that is on the back along with the ports.
Last but not you have the ability to remove the front panels of the speaker to provide you with more of a classic feel.
Sound Quality
These Sharp bookshelf speakers come with a 2-channel stereo that allows for a more spatial sound experience. For the user what this means is you get a more fuller and richer sound.
The speakers also come with a digital optical cable and this allows the audio signals to be received more perfectly even at long distances for example your speakers are positioned on a different level to the audio system or perhaps your TV if you are using them to enhance your TV sound.
These speakers also come with several EQ presets and you do notice the difference from Classic, Pop, Rock, Movie, Voice and Custom.
If you want to create a custom EQ you will need to press either the Bass or Treb buttons while the LED flashes for 2 seconds. You can increase or decrease the Bass or Treb via the remote control.
In terms of the overall sound quality, when you consider these are only £89.99 they sound great with a deep bass that punches harder than the footprint that it takes. We have tested these against a range of music.
When listening to something like “Alice Merton – No Roots” I was impressed with the bass considering the size of the woofers. The bass we got from these speakers is well-controlled and cleaner than I thought I was going to get this allows for clarity and detail in the music selected.
The Overall sound quality is crystal clear but only when the volume is at a manageable level for example 55% max. These speakers are ideal for a home studio and are a step up from your standard speakers built into a laptop. I felt this only improved my office setup.
When you have some downtime watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 not only is it a great film. The opening sequence is complex and the surround sound via these speakers performed very well and never came across as muddied.
Verdict
If you are looking for a quality pair of bookshelf speakers then the Sharp CP-SS30 needs to be in that conversation. The workmanship along with its digital capabilities makes them stand out.
Price-wise they are very affordable coming in at under the £100 mark meaning they are affordable for the young audio enthusiast in the house.
I was also impressed with the versatility of these speakers they can be used as computer speakers or even stereo speakers for a gathering at your home or when it’s time to chill out with some slow jazz played instantly via your mobile phone thanks to the Bluetooth 5.0.
It’s hard to find fault here if I had to say something I might want a stronger bass but that is just my taste. So if you have speakers on the Christmas list consider these.
