New research reveals a lack of understanding around home energy emissions with a fifth (20%) of people believing that appliance usage is the biggest culprit, when in fact it is leaving the heating on all day. With over a third (37%) of respondents feeling overwhelmed with how to lower their carbon emissions at home, Hive’s subscription service, Hive Heating Plus, is launching the ‘Carbon Calculator’ this month, a brand-new, easy to use, visual tool to help customers directly track their CO2 savings by making adjustments to their heating habits. Controlled seamlessly via the Hive app, the cutting-edge feature will display what an individual’s carbon savings equate to in straightforward metrics, such as the number of trees planted or miles in a car travelled.
Although the research shows that 64% of people want to be able to track their carbon emissions to do their bit for the environment, it also proves that a worrying amount are still in the dark about the impact of individual changes, with almost half (45%) unsure of how their everyday changes could improve the bigger picture. Homeowners were asked – if they turned their heating down by 1 degree – how long they think it would take to offset the same amount of CO2 as a 100-mile car journey*. The average answer was 2.25 months, when in fact it would only take 3 weeks**, showing that people do need more guidance in understanding the positive impact they could make.
This is where the Carbon Calculator is truly motivating – it not only tracks how much carbon the individual has saved since joining Hive Heating Plus but also how their savings have contributed to the overall amount of carbon saved across the entire Hive Heating Plus community, due to their healthier heating habits.***
To use in conjunction with the Carbon Calculator, Hive Heating Plus has also added the ‘Schedule Assist’ feature to its subscription service. Using data based on customers’ specific heating behaviours, Schedule Assist monitors energy usage to offer truly personalised tips on how customers can control their heating effectively. This means Hive will be able to show customers exactly how they can save energy in the home through small adjustments to their usage, including guidance on where cost savings can be made.
Henry Duff, Head of Net Zero at British Gas comments: “We want to help support customers make small, easy to implement changes that will not only make a difference to their energy usage at home, but also make a positive impact on a much larger scale. Hive Heating Plus’ Carbon Calculator and Schedule Assist features are the latest innovations designed to support people on their journey to becoming more carbon friendly, in a simple, digestible, user-friendly way. Not only will both these features help customers to keep a closer eye on their heating efficiency, with minimal effort from their phone, they directly show the impact they can make on their homes and community.”
