If you go into most bathrooms in the UK there is a good chance you will see an electric toothbrush however 1 in 3 people still use a manual toothbrush. In this review, we have been testing the Soocas Spark electric toothbrush which currently costs $55/£45 and falls into the budget end of the market.

The electric toothbrush Backstory

The electric toothbrush was invented in Switzerland by Philippe Guy Woog and his company Broxo SA his first brush was called the Broxodent.

The Electric toothbrush is available and comes in two types sonic & electric and both have their own benefits. In this review, we focus on the electric toothbrush that is designed to replicate hand motions meaning it will do the majority of the work when it comes to cleaning your teeth. An electric toothbrush can rotate from 3000 to 7500 motions per minute something not possible to do manually.

First Impressions

The Soocas Spark currently costs $55.99 and it keeps things basic there are no apps or fancy features like in the Oclean X Pro Elite we reviewed last year. This brush keeps things simple the brush is compact and lightweight paired with a sleek design. This brush offers you up to 30,000 sonic vibrations per minute at under $60.

The brush offers two modes one with gentle vibrations ideal for first-time use or sensitive teeth and a higher frequency for effective cleaning perfect for teeth whitening. The brush also has a zone switch reminder that after 30 seconds in one area, the brush will flash with a slight vibration to indicate to move to a new area in your mouth. Last but not least the brush has a two-minute timer to provide an indication of how long you have brushed.

The SOOCAS Spark also comes with a LED ring that will show you the battery status and it also comes with a USB-C port for charging once charged expect around a 40-day battery life after just 2 hours of charge.

Design

The Soocas Spark looks very sleek and streamlined product. The body is a cylindrical aluminium allow handle that comes with a transparent brush head. The size of the brush is 8.97 inches in length by 0.63 inches wide and is lightweight at just 2.1 ounces.

The body keeps things simple with just the single green button which is your power/mode button that the manufacturer says it has been tested with over 20,000 clicks which will last you years.

The provided brush head is made from a durable plastic that can handle pressure. The head is detachable but you are only provided one head. I would have liked an additional head provided but they are available on the Soocas site.

The provided toothbrush head uses DuPont bristles which are a form of nylon that I found no trouble using. The DuPont bristles are designed to effectively clean plaque without damaging the gums. The tips are rounded bristle tips to provide an extra layer of protection.

The bottom of the toothbrush body has a detachable plastic cover that shows the USB-C port and you are also provided with a fairly short USB-C cable. If you’re like me you have tons of USB-C cables around the house that will work with the toothbrush to provide charge.

The toothbrush has a LED positioned under the brush head that when you turn on the gentle mode it will light up green, In Cleaning mode, the LED will go blue and when the battery level gets low the LED will appear red.

When it’s time to go on holiday you are also provided with a plastic cover to keep the brush safe when travelling.

Last but not least as you expect the Soocas Spark is water resistant and is IPX8 rated meaning it could handle immersions under water so this brush will be able to handle getting wet.

Performance

The main talking point of any toothbrush is how it brushes I found the bristles to be quite soft, however, some with sensitive teeth might find their brush head needs to be a little softer. You will be pleased to know you won’t have much trouble finding replacement heads and could in theory use a third-party brush head.

The Soocas Spark uses sonic vibrations to break plaque up instead of what my Oral B electric toothbrush does by using oscillating rotating movements to clean my teeth. You will find both methods work just as well it’s more down to your personal preference. In terms of removing plaque, it won’t give those brushes in that £200 mark any missed night’s sleep.

However, if this is your first electric brush it will perform better than brushing with a manual brush. The reason for this is I found the bristles can with ease enter in between your teeth and even at the gentle setting the brush feels fairly abrasive and can clean your teeth fairly in-depth.

When you increase to cleaning mode this will increase the motor to up to 30,000 vibrations per minute and this level of power will be useful for teeth whitening. If you’re not trying to whiten your teeth some might find this level of speed a little uncomfortable.

When brushing you will get notified every 30 seconds this indicates to move to brush a new area and then there is a timer for 2 minutes to indicate you need to move from the bottom to the top.

The brush works well but if I had to find a way to improve this brush it would be when I compare it to my Oral-b brush it would have been nice for this brush to have provided a pressure sensor it has the LED built-in am sure this would not have been too difficult to add as you can’t tell how much pressure you are adding to your teeth.

Verdict

The Soocas Spark costs $55/£45 and it’s a nice budget-friendly toothbrush that offers the user a chance to use an electric toothbrush. The brush comes with that good build quality, IPX8 rating meaning you could even submerge the brush in water if you wish.

In terms of performance, the brush comes with 2 vibration modes to suit most users and it also comes with timers to help you brush areas of your mouth at the right time. I was also impressed with the long battery life.  If your looking for a brush with more settings then there is a wide range in the market to pick from. However, if your looking for a brush that keeps things simple then this brush is a well-built option to keep your teeth clean.
