Tellur is an accessory brand that has been producing products since 2015 based in Romania. We have already reviewed there Air Vent Magnetic Car Holder. This time we have had a chance to review the Callisto Wireless Speaker. 

This speaker is available in two colours: Red – £9.99 and Black-  £13.29 both available from Amazon.

This Speaker in a handheld speaker with 4 playback modes:

  • AUX
  • Bluetooth
  • FM Radio 
  • Micro SD

Design

This speaker as expected considering the cost has a plastic build and fabric cover over the speaker also in the box is a USB-A to Micro USB cable that also has a 3.5mm jack as part of the cable.

The speaker has 4 buttons on the top of the speaker:

▶ = Play/Pause/Answer/Finish Call

   +  =  Increase Volume or Skip Track

   – = Decrease Volume or Previous Track

    M = Function Button  

On the back of the speaker you have a cut out where the following can be found: 

  • SD Card
  • USB-A Port
  • On/Off Switch 
  • Micro-USB charging port

The Speaker comes with a rechargeable Li-ion battery and offers the user 2 hrs of playback which is quite poor but understandable as you will get change from £20. This speaker is designed to be an office speaker. It’s not waterproof so keep it away from the pool when we are allowed to holiday again. You could use this speaker outside if you wanted and the speaker fits in your hand meaning its perfect to take the speaker on the move.

Features/Performance

 

Using the speaker is also very easy when you switch on the speaker it will automatically start pairing and will indicate this with a Blue flashing LED that appears from under the fabric cover at the front where the speaker appears. Once connected you hear a voice telling you its connected. 

 

The controls I feel are a little backwards for example when am listening to Amazon Music a quick tap of the volume buttons actually change the track and if you want to control the volume you need to do a long press. You do get used to this but there nothing to show you where the volume is not on the phone and you only know you hit max volume when the voice assistant tells you. It’s an annoying set up in my eyes I would prefer the volume to be a quick tap and the track control to be a longer press.  When your playing music you will notice a flashing blue LED night I guess this just showing you the speaker is working.  

 

If you have music stored on an SD card or USB Stick this will pick up automatically connect to that once you switch the speaker on and have the SD Card or USB Stick inserted. I do question the need for these features when streaming music from your phone is so easy to do. 

 

This speaker also has an FM radio and to use this you need to have the Micro USB cable inserted as it acts as the antenna and then like changing the tracks a short press will move to a new station. I just find this a bit pointless if am honest it’s much quicker to use TuneIn Radio app instead of trying to tune this speaker in. Plus having the cable hanging out the back just looks a little unsightly. When switching between the Bluetooth, FM Radio & AUX you just have to press the M button which is the multi-function button.  

 

How does it sound? 

 

If you’re a Bass fan this speaker is not for you its got very little bass but the mids are ok considering the cost.  The speaker I expect has about a 1-inch driver as it offers 3 watts of audio but the sound a bit thin and at points, you get a lot of echo especially at the higher end of the volume.  

When listening to Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” You do actually get some decent high-mid presence which gives the track some punchiness. The vocals are delivered cleanly even at top volumes but then the sound starts to distort a little. Keep the volume at 50% and the overall sound quality is actually ok. 

 

This speaker also allows you to receive calls and you can answer a call simply by pressing the play button. The call quality was ok it’s not perfect but when making some work calls this speaker did the job to an acceptable level. 

 

Verdict 

 

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly desk speaker to its ok but you get a better speaker in my iPhone 12 so I do question the need for this speaker. Yes, it offers functions such as SD Card and USB stick modes where it takes music stored from them devices but who does that anymore with music streaming on your phone so easy to access. I found the FM Radio option a little annoying as it took to long to find a station and having the USB cable just hanging out looks messy if you ask me. 

 

Yes, the speaker looks nice but at only 2hours playback and Bluetooth 4.2 when most other speakers I have tested come with Bluetooth 5.0 so eventually this speaker will be left behind when we get Bluetooth upgrades. However, it does offer 10m range so you would not have to have your phone near the speaker all the time.

 

The Audio quality is acceptable if you’re not looking for perfect audio quality and just plays everything at an average level this speaker not a bad option if you’re looking for something cheap. Unfortunately, the controls for the volume and track control just annoys me so with this mind this speaker, not for me.
