The Tellur Smart Wi-Fi Indoor camera – £80.79 from Amazon
Overall Rating: 3.2 out of 5.0 stars – 3.25 stars
Tellur is a brand that really does offer everything to create that smart home ecosystem with a little help from the Tellur Smart App. This company sell everything from Wi-Fi switch ports, Smart Bulbs, Smart Thermostat and the Smart Aroma Diffuser we reviewed recently. In the review, we have the Wi-Fi Smart Indoor Camera which costs £80.79 from Amazon.
Design/Unboxing
Packaging wise Tellur uses the same colour packaging in all of there products the Blue/White packaging that shows you the product on the front, promotes the Tellur smart app on the side and on the back provides the technical specifications.
Inside the packaging you are given the following:
- 1x Indoor Smart Camera
- 1x Socket adapter & USB Cable – 180cm in length.
- Pack of Screws, Adhesive foil & Bracket
- Instruction manual
The camera is made of plastic and comes in two colours black down the middle with a grey on either side and the Tellur logo towards the base and on the back of the camera, you have a small speaker and a built-in mic on the top of the area where the camera is positioned.
Moving to the base it rotates nearly 360 ° and still allows for the micro USB cable to be inserted. It does seem a little tricky to insert the cable into the port. I feel it should be better positioned. However, once inserts it does not have any impact when the camera rotates as there is a cut out at the bottom to make sure the cable fits as well as the bracket if you are to mount it to the ceiling.
Set-Up
Once you have decided where the camera will be positioned for the best record footage and you have that USB cable plugged in. Make sure you download the Tellur Smart App which is available on both IOS or Android. As this is a Wi-Fi Camera you need to connect it to the internet. Just like the Aroma Diffuser, I have reviewed it needs to be on a 2.4GHz network compared to the more popular 5GHz. This is a point that might annoy potential buyers of this product. However, it is possible to switch your network to the lower 2.4GHz.
Once you have followed the steps displayed in the app like below you will be ready to use the camera.
Features/ Performance
The camera offers a full HD 1080p quality footage and comes with a sound/motion detection that provides push notifications which allows you to connect with the app anywhere in the world. The issue with this is the camera can not tell the difference between your pet and an intruder which does result in quite a few false notifications. If you like myself don’t own a pet I found the camera did work very well.
The camera allows the user via the app to zoom/tilt/pan the image you view via the app and the footage was quite decent for a budget camera. It offers a frame rate of 1-25/second so you should be happy with the image quality. If you wanted to connect the camera to the ceiling the image can be turned via the app with ease.
You also have the advantage of Two Way audio which can scare off an intruder and warn them the police have been called. However, this could also be used to communicate with an older member of your family if required if you saw them have a fall.
This camera also offers infrared night vision which does provide an acceptable footage quality when viewing the footage at night. The good thing I felt was this camera would know when to switch the footage over automatically. The infrared sensor offers 10 meters in terms of when it can pick up an alert at night.
When recording footage you can only record on an SD card up to 128GB and the camera records continuously 24 hours a day and offers a panoramic view of the room you are recording and the app allows you to move the camera vertically and horizontally to get a full view of the room.
How does this camera fail compared against its rivals?
The main issues with this camera are the fact the motion detection just triggers on any kind motion not just human movement. This becomes annoying at times due to the number of false alerts. I also found that when you go out the camera does not have a patrol option. What I mean by this the camera is fixed on a set area but does not automatically rotate to show other areas not displayed in the current view displayed on the camera.
Other negatives you are unable to use cloud storage you can use SD Card however when you get a motion notification that you have to manually record in the app to your phone. This is an unusual way to record motion alerts. The problem with this is if you’re just relying on the SD card to record whats stopping an intruder from taking the SD Card.
Last but not least this camera will only work on the Tellur smart home interface and does not support the Google Home or Apple Homekit.
Verdict
The Tellur Smart Wi-Fi Camera does provide some good features such as two-way audio & Night vision and the fact you can control the camera view with zoom/Tilt/Pan. The image quality is 1080p full HD which does offer a good quality image during the day or night. This camera does cover the basics needed but the fact the motion detection really needs improving and the lack of cloud storage is a factor that might put some consumers off. I also find the fact it only works on a 2.4GHz network instead of the normal 5GHz network an issue.
However, considering the cost and the fact you wanted to pair it up with all the other products in the Tellur smart home range you could its not the worst camera and if they could improve on the above negatives especially being unable to connect it to Google Home or Apple Homekit it could be a very good option for home security.
