If you are looking for your child’s first smartwatch the Nickwatch we have been tasked with reviewing has a lot of benefits. The watch provides entertainment for the child but also provides a link for safe communication and connectivity between the kids.
The watch also features the channel’s most iconic characters such as Sponge Bob Square Pants.
First impressions
The Nickwatch currently costs £79.99 and comes with a large range of games and activities based on popular shows. These games are not only fun but also designed to be educational and help children develop skills such as:
- Problem-Solving
- Hand-eye coordination
The watch also comes with music and dances that the kids can enjoy making it an ideal accessory when out with friends. Moving to the main benefit, the connectivity of the Nickwatch allows a chat feature that allows kids to send messages to friends and family who also have the same watch.
Design
The watch is modern in its design and comes with a vibrant display that is easy to navigate. The watch is also water-resistant ideal considering a 6 year old would be wearing the watch who is active and on the go all day.
Another benefit when it comes to the design is the added camera and the quality of images we recorded was also excellent quality.
There are a few downsides to this watch, mainly because of its limited compatibility as it is designed for children in the age range of 6 to 9 years old older children might find this watch a little young for them so it’s only got a short life.
We also found the strap does not stay on the arm of your child very well. The Nickwatch would benefit from a clip or stronger velcro but that is just a small negative.
Performance
I gave this watch to a friend of mine with 3 children aged 8, 5 & 3 years old so we had a good opportunity to see who it was more suitable for. Her feedback was that the touchscreen was very responsive and it was very user-friendly. She was impressed with the character theme throughout the games which was very appealing.
Other benefits include a clear bright screen allowing you to see the watch even in poor lighting conditions. She also found the NickWatch phone app easy to navigate and sync to the watch.
The Nickwatch also allows for phone calls and a chat feature the call quality is really good considering the price of the watch. The Chat is quite basic but suitable for a child with a good selection of emojis and voice notes are very clear and easy to record. What she did find invaluable was the tracking on the NickWatch app she said this was brilliant and came with a really easy clear map allowing her to have control and being able to see where the kids are at any point in time.
She did say she felt the watch was more suited to the older child as reading the instructions in games was better suited to the 8-year-old as the 5-year-old might struggle. She also mentioned the keyboard was quite small so this could be a little fiddly for a young child.
Overall Verdict
The NickWatch is an excellent option for kids 6 to 9 years old and like particular characters who want a safe and fun way to stay in contact with friends and family. There are a number of customization features that make this a great choice who for example want to change the screen face.
There is a good selection of games for both sexes to play and they enjoyed the novelty of being able to text mum which they have not been able to do on other devices. She would definitely recommend the watch for children aged 6+ so that they can fully understand all the features of a smartwatch before they move on to more grown-up models.
Overall this is an excellent watch that is easy to use and the tracking, chat and phone calls are brilliant for both parent and child. A small negative might be the subscription fee of £89 for 1 year or £149 for 2 years this might put some users off as it seems quite high. They also offer a monthly offering if you want to consider that.
