With the beginning of another New Year, we take a look at the biggest and best games that will most likely be released in 2022, barring any more delays caused by our little friend COVID-19…

1 – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, “Breath of the Wild 2”, is aiming to launch for Nintendo Switch in 2022. The setting for the adventure has been expanded to include the skies above Hyrule, taking the game to new heights. With upgraded graphics, more free roam content and greater depth to missions, the second edition of the highly popular original Breath of the Wild game comes with great expectation and hype. Like any sequel, there’s always the risk of it not being as good as the original, but we shall wait and see.

2 – Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is set to be released on 18 February 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, barring any last-minute delays or complications.

The post-apocalyptic, machine-beast filled America of the future is yours to explore, with secrets, factions and tribes, this game looks to be one of those games that is jam-packed full of content that will keep you interested throughout. This interesting take on an RPG is only exclusive to Playstation.

3 – Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Set in the same region as Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and their remakes, Pokemon Legends: Arceus is one of the most highly anticipated Pokemon games. Steering away from Pokemon’s traditional 2D style, Arceus opts for a 3D, RPG, free-roam approach, similar to the approach of Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The key difference I’ve noticed so far between Arceus and Sword and Shields’ 3D style is that Arceus seems to offer a larger area of exploration, with a less shackled feel as to how and what you can do when free-roaming. There is no doubt Arceus will be one of the most talked-about Pokemon games on release, with traditional and newer Pokemon fans most likely having split opinions.

4 – Saints Row

A wild new take on a cult classic, Saints Row gets a 2022 reboot, with all new locations, graphics and storyline. The fresh take on Saint’s Row is set in the city of Santo Ileso, A southwest American-like city. The gang of characters – The Boss, Nina, Kevin, and Eli – are starting up a “criminal empire” that you’ll be building and expanding throughout the game. The city has been described as the biggest Volition has created yet, and will include multiple, unique gangs, each of which needs to be taken down.

5 – Rainbow Six Extraction

A Rainbow Six Siege spin-off, cooperatively work together with fellow players to engage in combat and defeat a type of parasite-like aliens called the Archaeans. This game was technically teased as a game mode in Rainbow Six Siege, with the ‘Containment Event’, which included a new game mode called Nest Destruction. Players took to a reworked version of the Consulate map, which was ruled over by the Chimera Parasite, a concept which appears to have been carried over to a whole new game. If you played the limited time event, then you can have an idea of what to expect in Rainbow Six Extraction.

6 – Dying Light 2: Stay Human

The sequel to the original Dying Light, Dying Light 2: Stay Human is an action role-playing survival horror video game, featuring a zombie apocalyptic-themed open world. Starring a new protagonist named Aiden Caldwell, who is equipped with various parkour skills, Dying Light 2: Stay Human is set 20 years after the original Dying Light.

Players can perform actions such as climbing ledges, sliding, leaping off from edges, and wall running to quickly navigate the city, whilst slaying and slashing away at unlimited zombies (and the occasional human…). This game is definitely one to check out if you want a combination of Mirrors Edge and The Walking Dead, with intense parkour and endless zombies bound to be barrels of fun.

7 – Elden Ring

One of 2022’s most anticipated games, Elden Ring is one of those RPGs where you will most likely die 20 times, but nothing will beat the relief and sense of achievement of beating that enemy. Influenced by Lord of the Rings, Elden Ring is a fantasy RPG featuring magical, gothic-looking demons and juggernauts, all waiting to be slain.

This game seems to give off a similar feel to a Dark Souls or Sekiro game, with tough enemies and medieval/gothic architecture, giving it a feel of a classic RPG. With your goal being the title of Elven Lord, battle your way past each enemy in a bid to follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to finally stand before the Elden Ring.

8 – Hogwarts Legacy

A Harry Potter RPG. Yes, you read that right, it is finally going to happen. Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, open-world action RPG set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books where you will battle mystical monsters with your very own wand and spells. I highly doubt the thought of running about Hogwarts and doing various wizarding activities with your own created wizard does not fill every single one of us Harry Potter fans with pure excitement. Get sorted into one of the houses, pick your side between dark and light, and build your own wizarding story.

9 – Forspoken

An isekai (the concept of being reincarnated into a new world) RPG that follows the protagonist, Frey Holland, a young woman who is transported from New York City to the fantasy world of Athia and uses magical powers to journey through it and survive in order to find her way home. An interesting take on an RPG that surprisingly isn’t seen too often, despite the popularity of isekai storylines in Netflix shows and anime. Forspoken looks like a beautiful game with intricate character design, frightening enemies and satisfying magical animations and I’ll tell you what, I have a feeling this game has the potential to be one of those graphical masterpieces that might not be the talk of the town, but will quietly be a sensational game.

10 – God of War Ragnarok

2018’s God of War was a fantastic reboot of the over-the-top and grandiose action-adventure series starring the fallen demi-god Kratos, and the follow-up, God of War: Ragnarok, is finally likely going to be released in 2022. The sequel to the very successful God of War game will see the return of Kratos and Atreus as they continue to explore much more of the ancient Norse realms and encounter even more powerful and destructive gods looking for retribution. Ragnarok has high expectations, with the most recent God of War picking up all sorts of awards, nominations and praise, we can only expect that its sequel on the next-gen Playstation 5 will follow suit.
