Tozo is a brand we here at What Gadget have covered a few products such as the Tozo Golden 1, Tozo T6 & the most recent the Tozo Openego all priced under the £100 mark.
So when I was told they have also released two Bluetooth Speakers called the Tozo PA1 & Tozo PA2. I was not very surprised to hear they are available for under £100 but as I always say dont just venture to Amazon you might find going to the brand directly will save you a few pounds.
First Impressions
In this review, we have been testing the Tozo PA1 which is a pill-shaped Bluetooth speaker which comes with the following key features:
- 20W Audio Sound
- IPX 7 Rated
- 25 hour Battery
- Bluetooth Calling
The Tozo PA1 is currently available in just black costing £59.99 via the Tozo website. – It’s also worth knowing if you had the code: 04VK4CPG you get a good discount and the speaker is available for £27.38 which is madness!
Unboxing
The packaging for the Tozo PA1 has had some consideration put into it with a picture of the speaker on the front and some details around the spec of this speaker on the rear.
When you open the packaging you are provided with a USB-C charging Cable, Instruction Manual, The Speaker and a lanyard. Now the lanyard can be attached to the speaker’s side, allowing you to hang this up in the bathroom while singing your favourite tune or hang the speaker up in the garden when having friends around.
Design
The first thing you will notice about this Bluetooth speaker is the shape its pill-shaped design which comes with a small bump on the back to allow you to place it on a flat surface.
Now this speaker only comes in black with a matt finish that gives the speaker a more premium feel. This speaker has a metal-like grille with the Tozo logo positioned dead centre. This speaker is not very large measuring 210 x 91 x 61mm and is very lightweight at only 590 grams.
This speaker feels well-built and durable for everyday use. Plus with the offering of IPX7 rating, it is water resistant and can be submerged in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This is helpful if you have this speaker poolside while on holiday and knocked it into the pool by mistake.
The controls of this speaker are all positioned at the top of the speaker consisting of Power, Bluetooth Pairing Button, Play/Pause which also allows you to answer or reject a call and allows you to wake up the smart assistant via your phone, volume increase and decrease which also double up as track control such as skipping to the next track and a mode button which is to do with the EQ presets- Treble+, Standard and Bass+. The buttons are displayed clearly and you should be able to figure out what each button does unless you have just been asleep for the last 50 years.
Battery Life
Another important factor to consider when buying a speaker is the battery life Tozo states that at 50% volume, you should get around 25 hours which should please most people. However, I have been testing this speaker at the mentioned 50% volume and I was getting closer to 15 which is still ok not even close to 25 hours. When you do use up to battery life charging does take a while at 2 hours using the provided USB-C charge cable.
Connectivity
In regards to connectivity, the Tozo PA1 uses Bluetooth 5.0 with a range of 10 meters. When you turn on this speaker for the first time it will go into pairing mode immediately. You will see a blue Bluetooth LED positioned next to the power button start to flash until you connect it using your mobile phone.
Once connected you will see a strong blue light and you’re ready to use. Now you will notice there is a Bluetooth button if pressed twice it will disconnect from your device allowing you to connect it to something else. If you are more than likely just going to use one device then your be pleased to know it connects automatically. It is also worth knowing the Tozo PA1 does also offer dual pairing but as you might expect you need to own a second PA1 to do this unfortunately for this review I was not sent a second unit. Last but not least the speaker also supports AAC & SBC Codecs.
Sound Quality
Inside this portable speaker is a 20W 60mm full range speaker plus 2x 80mmx50 passive radiators What this means for the average listener this would give you the best sound possible.
Now recently on the radio, I heard Heather Small -Proud and fell back in love with that artist. So when testing this speaker that had to be the track I used and the instrumental as it builds up sounds great and Heather’s vocals are crisp and clear. Now I had this song on at 80% volume and when the track got going it at that point wanted to be joined by a strong bass but it was just missing that punch I wanted. That said when you think it is an under £60 Bluetooth speaker.
Most users who keep their expectations not too high will find the bass is decent but for me, I just wanted a little more. Now when listening you might get a call through and you can answer and speak the call experience was fine but you did need to be close to the speaker to be heard this is solely due to the single built-in mic.
Tozo Smart App
As mentioned we have reviewed some Tozo earbuds recently and the PA1 Bluetooth Speaker both share the Tozo Smart App which I have found to be a fantastic app and a benchmark for other brands I feel.
The Tozo app looks like it’s had yet another upgrade it just looks class and has increased the number of presets to 32 with something to please everyone. You also still have the choice to create your own EQ profile or pick a made EQ via the Tozo Community which is still a unique offering I have not seen by any other brand.
When you first download the app it asks you to create a profile then the homepage comes with 5 icons at the bottom:
- Home
- Products
- Community
- AI
- MyTozo
The AI button comes with many pre-loaded tracks, from soothing to relaxing and everything in between, ideal if you struggle to unwind. There is even a timer, so if you set it and fall asleep, the music will not continue after that period.
The products page is an online store and the community page is where you can find a range of EQs that have been made by the Tozo community. Last but not least the MyTozo page is where the settings page is located. As I say I love this app and feel a lot of brands can take inspiration from this app the design and what is included.
Verdict
The Tozo PA1 is priced at a great price range of just under £60 I feel you do have good value for money for a 20W speaker. The speaker works well either outside thanks to IPX7 water resistance or inside when working and listening to your fav tunes. The look of the speaker looks good but won’t blow you away.
The connection to the Tozo App is a big bonus allowing you to customise the EQ in the app but it’s also nice to be able to change it via the speaker as well but it’s more limited than the app. In terms of sound quality, you a provided with a decent sound it just lacks in the bass department for me. That said if you’re on a budget and want a Bluetooth speaker you won’t have any complaints from the Tozo PA1.
