The mobile market as a whole is not really focusing on the senior market apart from the likes of TTFone, Doro & Emporia providing a wide range of products to keep old aged pensioners from being Isolated from their families. However, not only does the senior market benefit from phones like this. They are also useful for users with reduced eyesight and hearing and will also find a phone with larger icons and a loudspeaker easier to use.
You will also notice these senior market devices also come with features such as loud volume and emergency SOS buttons as we have seen on the Emporia Smart 5 which retails for £249 which some users may find too expensive.
In this review, we focus on the TTfone TT190 which currently retails at only £16.99 and the main features are:
- Largely separated keypad with a large font
- Loud Volume
- Programmable SOS button
Design
The TTfone TT190 is designed for someone who looks at an iPhone with complete terror the TT190 is the most basic phone I have seen on the market.
The phone is made of durable plastic for longevity and comes with a 1.77-inch display with a screen distinction of 128 x 160 pixels. Size wise this will fit in your pocket with ease as it measures 11.5 x 5.5 x1.3cm (HxWxD). The phone is also very lightweight at only 73.5g you will barely notice the phone in your jacket pocket. Last but not least the phone comes with 32MB internal memory and allows for a micro SD card of up to 16GB.
The TT190 also comes with a loudspeaker for calls and also a speakerphone if you need an even louder volume. You get provided with 3 levels of sound:
- Ring Volume – 105.6 decibels Max
- Call Volume – 80.4 decibels Max
- Speakerphone – 91.3 decibels Max
The phone also comes with a handy flashlight at the top of the phone that can be switched on via the switch at the side of the phone. Useful if you need to see what you are doing at nighttime for example unlocking a door after a crazy night at the bingo. The phone also comes with a 3.5mm jack at the bottom of the phone for the use of wired headphones.
The keypad has a largely separated keypad that allows the user to easier typing and it also comes with a keypad backlight for assistance when typing or dialling and the daylight is poor. When sending a message you will notice the phone comes with large fonts ideal for someone with poor eyesight.
Moving to the rear of the phone is the emergency assistance button otherwise known as the SOS alarm when pressed will reach out to selected friends and family by the touch of the SOS button.
Last but not least the battery life is 600mAh removable battery like the phones of yesterday. The simple software of the phone not taking much battery life this phone could last a whole 5 days on a single charge.
When it comes to recharging the TT190 comes with a USB-A to micro-USB charging cable but does not come with a mains plug if you want that it will cost an extra £4.99 on the TTfone site or just go on amazon and buy one for half that price.
Features
The TTfone may be the cheapest phone we have ever reviewed but the phone does come with a range of features:
Phonebook – Allows the user to add a new contact, Search for a contact and delete contacts if you so wish.
Multimedia – Provides the user with an audio player, Image viewer, Video Player, Sound recorder, and FM radio.
Organiser – Calculator, Alarm, Calendar, File Manager.
Languages – The phone can be used in the following languages- English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Polish & Arabic.
The Emergency Assistance Button
The Emergency assistance button is the main star of the show on this phone. A single click on the SOS option makes it easy to contact others in an emergency, giving you and your loved ones peace of mind. Simply add your emergency contact into the SOS settings and with one press it will make that important call. The emergency SOS button will reach out to each of your 5 emergency contacts until one answers. It also provides an alarm to grab attention if required.
Connectivity
The TTfone TT190 comes unlocked and sim free and will work with all the major networks but my concern is this phone only offers 2G connectivity and the government has agreed with networks to switch off 2G & 3G in 2033. This phone, therefore, is fine for now but won’t work come 2033.
Verdict
The TTfone TT190 does the basics well and it’s very user-friendly with clear indications of red or green keys for answering or ending calls. The TT190 also has a speed dial facility as well as a series of shortcut keys. This allows you to contact someone with a single press of a button.
The Battery life is also a bonus as it will last all week depending on the amount of call time you have. The inclusion of the SOS button is very important as it’s basically the main reason you would buy a phone like this.
If your looking for a phone for nan or grandad that is simple and won’t be too confusing to use this phone is budget friendly and will tick all their boxes.
