In this review, I check out the Twelve South HoverBar Duo, a great name for a functional product that may solve many of your iPad gripes.
There are many iPad stands on the market, so when Twelve South announced the HoverBar Duo, it seemed that it would tick so many boxes…so, does it?
What is the Twelve South HoverBar Duo?
Described by themselves as “An adjustable iPad stand that frees your hands so you can do more – and create more – with iPad”.
When I first saw this product launch, I was excited! If you’re like me, you will have your rather pricey iPad in some form of case that doubles up as a stand, right? BUT, finding that perfect angle/height to suit your needs becomes a chore. The HoverBar duo sets out to solve this and seeing the launch video and pictures was when I thought…that’s it…that is exactly what I need!
Unboxing
As expected, the unboxing experience from TwelveSouth is satisfying. The product is weighty, made of quality metal and plastics which just gives you so much confidence straight off the bat.
In the box you get the iPad clip, desk base with the arm attached, a shelf clamp and hex tools to support.
Setting up the HoverBar Duo is a breeze and and looks great, as with any other products from the Twelve South line-up.
The base is weighted nicely with four rubber grips to keep it in place on your chose work surface. The base also has a trick groove which allows you to place your Apple Pencil down, as you need somewhere to place the pencil when the iPad is in use.

The Functionalities
With a choice of using the base or a shelf clamp, this gives you a range of ways to use the stand. For me, the base proved to be the solution I needed. The HoverBar has a main vertical arm that swivels and allows you to move the iPad from side to side and front to back. Then you have the second arm which has the iPad attachement, this then gives you the control of tilting the screen to suit your ideal viewing angle.
The HoverBar is compatible with a very wide range of iPad generations, to be honest, you can obviously use these with other tablet products, as long as they are a maximum of 220m (8.68in) in width and 127mm (5in) in Height.
The only negative for me which I hope they evolve (if there’s a gen 2) is switching from the base to the shelf clamp. You have to know which solution you will be using most, as it is time consuming switching between the two solutions, as you are required to use the hex tool for this.
Version 2…please have some form of “Quick Release” so that you can easily have your work stations setup and ready to go!
Using the HoverBar Duo
So, for the purpose of this review, it was all about finding a few ways that you would use it, and it delivered in every scenario.
If you are a sole iPad user, then you have the option to bring the iPad up to eye-level and use a separate keyboard and mouse. You can use it for great video calling angles or even recording video tutorials or vlogging etc.

If you’re an Apple user then you can make great use of the SideCar to extend your display, which I personally would use it for most, everyone loves some extra screen real estate right? This is perfect for that, allowing you to host calls and still work on documents at the same time if need be.
Flat Lay like a BOSS!
The other great feature is being able to set the HoverBar up for flat lay pictures or even unboxing videos (one day). This is a great way to make use of the iPad’s camera function. Again, this is great for those who might want to record tutorials too.
What more can I say?
To be honest, I could go on for a while if I was to go through everything that this product could offer and support you in multiple ways. Seriously, this has to be one of the best iPad stand solutions out there…at a great price!
It has so many adjustments and functions, it will solve those multi-tasking issues with ease and is most definitely a must-have iPad accessory, seriously!
Apart from the process of switching from the base to the shelf solution, it really is a fantastic product.
