The Twelve South Hoverbar Tower makes using an iPad convenient in any situation.
If you are an iPad user more than likely use the iPad as a stand-in for your TV or even a secondary display. Many of us are guilty of trying to prop up the tablet using anything we have in the house.
Twelve South which is an Apple accessory brand that we have covered products such as Twelve South HiRise 3, Twelve South Forte and Twelve South Hoverbar Duo has come up with a free-standing arm called the HoverBar Tower which currently costs £129 and comes in two colour options black or white.
First Impressions
The Twelve South Hoverbar Tower is a hands-free iPad stand that you can adjust in height from about 2.5 ft to just over 5ft high. The stand is compatible with all iPad models and will even hold the iPad even if it’s in a case.
I was impressed with the fact it could become part of your fitness workouts for example if you have a treadmill and want to watch a video while working out no problem. It’s also good for them low floor exercise routines such as yoga. The Hoverbat Tower also gives you 360-degree flexibility.
Unboxing
The Hoverbar tower is not one of them devices with 100 parts inside the box you are provided with the following:
- Weighted base
- 3x Post Poles
- 1x articulating arm and iPad attachment.
You will also notice how sturdy it is but also how lightweight it is as well as weighing in at only 4kg.
Design/Build
As is the norm now with most Twelve South products we have reviewed the build quality will not let you down. The hover bar tower is very solid and made with steel for the base and aluminium for the poles.
The iPad attachment is made of plastic as you might expect and comes with a nice rubber inlay to protect the iPad.
It can expand to hold even the largest 12.9-inch iPad pro with ease. The articulating arm offers two hinges that allow for that 360 degrees of flexibility.
The attachment is secured on a ball joint that provides even more adjustment. Finally, the base is made of steel with foam padding in the corners to protect the floor below.
Set up/ Daily Use
When setting up the Twelve South HoverBar Tower you will find it to be a very easy process. Assembling the stand is done by simply connecting the poles together. You need to make sure all the threads align correctly from the base to the adjustable clamp will take about 10 minutes to put together.
Once assembled the adjustable clamp will expand to fit whichever iPad model you own. We reviewed the Hoverbar Tower using an iPad pro and even at that size the clamp allowed the iPad to be held nicely and securely.
You will notice the stand once assembled does weigh in at 3.95 kg which although quite heavy not impossible to move around the house or even take to the office if required. As disassemble is just as easy as putting it together.
Once the iPad has been fitted into the clamp you will notice 360-degree flexibility allowing you to view the iPad in either portrait or landscape. Now as mentioned the clamp fits onto a ball joint allowing an extra movement option so the user can get the perfect viewing angle.
There is only one slight negative we used this in front of a treadmill while running and although the Hoverbar Tower comes with a weighted base the stand did move a little.
Verdict
The Hoverbar Tower is a multiple-use tablet stand designed with the iPad in mind. You can use this device high up when on something like a treadmill or low down when doing some floor exercises. It’s not just handy for fitness its got a good few day-to-day options such as having your iPad for meetings.
It would have also been handy in Covid times when you want to do a video call and you want the whole family in a shot. Remember them zoom quiz nights in 2020. The Hoverbar Tower can also be set up in the kitchen when your following a recipe so you do not get the iPad in a flowery mess when backing.
As you can see there are a number of uses for the HoverBar Tower. As mentioned the ball joint & clamp are also rather useful to adjust your viewing of the iPad as having it in both portrait or landscape allows for a good level of flexibility.
As mentioned if we had to find a fault with this device would be in certain situations you will experience a slight wobble when pressing the iPad screen however apart from putting a larger weight on the base there is not much you can do about it you can’t fight with gravity.
Overall, I was very impressed with the overall use and flexibility of this device and the fact it allows you to use a variety of different-sized iPads will please most users especially if there are a few different-sized iPads in the home. If you are looking for a useful accessory to complement your iPad use the Twelve South Hoverbar Tower is an excellent choice and at £129 it seems like a bargain.
