Cooking meat on the BBQ can be challenging Typhur InstaProbe Core offers a smart way to see when your meat or chicken is fully cooked and it’s a great baking aid.
Summertime is coming so that means one thing it’s nearly BBQ season and when you cook for a large group making sure that your meat is at the correct temperature is vital.
So having something like an instant-read thermometer is a really useful tool. Two years ago we had the chance to review the ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE and we have been using it ever since when on the BBQ but also when cooking in the kitchen and even baking. So When we were approached to review the Typhur InstaProbe Core I wondered what could be different to the Thermapen One.
Who is Typhur?
Typhur is a brand you might no best if you are a professional chef due to their Sous Vide station. This US-based company is creating new products to help the family cook like professionals.
First Impressions
Buying an Instant-read thermometer is one of those gadgets that you question at first if you need it but when you buy one you think how did I cook without it?
The main benefit of this device is it prevents eating undercooked food and removes any guesswork on whether your food is safe to eat or needs more cocking time. An instant-read thermometer is also useful to prevent you from overcooking food as who wants dry chicken for example?
The Typhur InstaProbe Core main features include:
- An Operating temp range from -4° to 122°F (-20° to 50°C)
- Displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius.
- 360° display rotation.
- Increments in 0.1°
- IP67 rated
Design
The Typhur InstaProbe Core is very futuristic looking compared to the ThermoWorks Thermapen One we have to compare it to. It takes you a few seconds to figure out where the display is as it looks so different from the Thermapen One.
The Body on the Instaprobe is shiny but without impacting on the reflection you can read the display even on the sunniest days. The design features a 1.87-inch OLED display that provides an easy-to-read temperature reading that also comes with an auto-rotating display that rotates 180 degrees.
In addition to the body, the thermometer comes with a probe attached that measures 4.3 inches which offers a versatile device for measuring most types of food. The Instraprobe also comes with an IP67 rating meaning it could handle temporary submersion if required.
Overall the Instaprobe offers excellent build quality and display and a foldable probe and that auto-rotating display comes in handy when testing the temperature of a cake or when you are cooking on the BBQ. If I had to find a fault it would be the position of the probe the Thermapen One has a notch in the body to tuck in the sharp probe whereas the instaProbe does not offer any such a storage solution for the probe so it could become dangerous and you could stab yourself by mistake.
Instead of storing the InstaProbe in your cutlery drawer with the risk the probe could stab you accidentally. You actually have an integrated magnet meaning you could store it on the extractor fan as long as it’s made of metal or store it on the metal shelf of your grill that allows you to grab it as and when required.
Now the InstaProbe has a battery compartment on the rear of the device and requires you to use a Phillips screwdriver to access the battery. in this section, you can also press a button to allow you to switch the display setting.
Features
The main feature is the OLED display as the display is black when you go to check if your food is cooked properly the numbers will show up white. This allows you to see the reading regardless of if you are cooking in the sunshine or in the low light of an oven. The OLED display also auto-rotates when you swivel the InstaProbe around to get the best reading Ideal if you are testing a turkey at Christmas.
Other features include motion sensing power it will go into sleep mode when not used to conserve battery life. When you touch it or simply shake it to wake it. It also provides a resolution of up to 0.1° meaning it offers a high degree of accuracy when in use that I feel is faster if not as fast as the ThermoWorks Thermapen One.
Performance
As mentioned the Typhur InstaProbe provides a very accurate reading but it also provided for 0.75 seconds and this will be displayed for up to 15 seconds. You will see in real-time the temperature of your food changing which is incredible.
If we get a little technical there is something called direct contact thermocouple integration (DCTi). What they have done is created the thermocouple sensor directly on the tip of the probe. At the same time, they fill the internal space of the probe by using thermoplastic to maximise heat transfer efficiency. The result is the reading is shown on the OLED screen along with the current battery level so you know when it will need new batteries.
Verdict
The Typhur InstaProbe is really easy to use and you are provided with a useful instruction sheet which is most useful when you need to replace the batteries and also how to switch the recording measurement from Celsius and Fahrenheit.
When it’s time to use the InstaProbe simply swing out the probe and that will be ready to use. Then make sure the tip of the probe gets as close to the middle of the dish you are cooking or if it’s meat in the centre of the meat. This allows you to get an accurate reading.
Overall if you like your cooking devices to have that futuristic vibe as well as reassuring to know you have a fast and accurate reading to prevent serving under or overcooked food. So if you are looking for an instant-read thermometer that would not look out of place in a professional kitchen and combines speed with accuracy and versatility the InstaProbe ticks all the boxes. When it comes down to cost they are available for £89 which is quite reasonable it is slightly more expensive compared to the ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE at only £68. They are both excellent options but for that more professional look, the Typhur InstaProbe just edges it for me.
