Looking for a new innovative and super fast way to brush their pearly whites?
Dental hygiene is an important aspect for us all as you know 2 in 3 of us adults have visible plaque and over the last year 6 million adults in the UK have a long-lasting pain caused by toothache. So looking after your teeth has never been more important.
Now brushing your teeth twice a day we are advised to do that for 2 minutes each time but there is a brand in France that says we could significantly reduce that time spent to 10 seconds at the top and 10 seconds at the bottom. In this review, we take a closer look at the Y-Brush.
First Impressions
The Y-Brush first landed on a Kickstarter campaign in 2018 and now you can buy the Nylonstart model for £70.99 and the NylonBlack model for £115.99 or the child version for £88.99. Price wise this aligns with most premium electric toothbrushes so let’s see if reducing the time spent brushing puts this brush on the same par price-wise as your electric toothbrush.
Unboxing
The Ybrush when it arrives comes in fairly simple cardboard packaging with a picture of the Y-Brush on the front and with that promise the manufacturer offers “Brush your teeth effectively in 10 seconds”. In this review, we got sent the NylonBlack which comes with 4 vibration modes compared to the Nylonstart which just has one vibration mode apart from that they are identical.
Inside the packaging, you have the “NylonBlack electric toothbrush”, 1x Brush head (Medium size) you can buy the small size at the point of purchase. There is also a USB-A to USB-C charging cable and you also have a toothpaste applicator
Design
The Y-Brish consists of a brush head that looks very much like a gumshield inside that semicircular tray are little nylon bristles all away around that are designed to clean all areas of your mouth at one time. The use of nylon bristles is clinically proven to do a better job of removing plaque than other bristles on the market. In testing this device I found the bristles to be soft and did not cause any irritation or mouth bleeding.
Now everyone has different-sized mouths and the bonus of the Y-Brush is the brushing head is made from quite a flexible plastic that can adjust to fit in most mouth arches.
The brushing head slots onto a wedge-shaped handle that is made of plastic and has a single large button in the middle of it that is surrounded by an LED ring that shows the user the battery level and more importantly which mode they have selected.
Also provided is a small green silicone adapter I did wonder what this was for when I first opened it but after a demo I soon realised you place it over the toothpaste tube allowing it to dispense a thin line of paste that will sit in-between the bristles. We were also provided with a tube of their own toothpaste but you can use your own just take note it needs relatively thin toothpaste I found Colgate triple action is a good paste to use for this device.
At the side of the device is where the USB-C charging port is located and once fully charged expect a battery life of 3 months!
Vibration levels on the Y-Brush are the following:
Soft – 15 seconds
Normal – 10 seconds
Intensive- 5 seconds
Unlimited- Always on
Set up/ Performance
Once you have got the Y-Brush out of the packaging you need to give it a full charge then you are looking at a battery life of up to 3 months sometimes even longer. Then make sure the brush head has been placed on the handle. Then run the brush head under some water and then using the silicone adapter place it on the toothpaste tube and squeeze a thin line of paste along the bristles.
When the Y-Brush has had the toothpaste applied start with the top of your mouth put the brush head in your mouth and press the power button for one second to turn it on and then again to adjust the intensity settings. You will notice the button does need a firm press to power up. When the vibration is on you need to chew vigorously and also move side to side to get the best clean. When the vibration stops repeat the process but this time for the bottom of your mouth.
The lower intensity level runs for about 15 seconds whereas the high intensity offers 5 seconds to clean your mouth. The manufacturer says to use the 15-second option for a few days to get used to it but then increase the intensity.
In testing, you will find having this in your mouth and chewing vigorously and moving the brush side to side even for a short period of time a very strange feeling after few days you do get used to it.
I have been using this for two weeks now and it’s just very odd that my teeth cleaning can be done in 15 seconds. However, there is a big BUT here yes the Y-Brush did clean the flat surfaces of your teeth well but when we took a further inspection the Y-Brush left deposits of plaque around the gums and between your teeth. This has resulted in the need to use dental floss for longer. I just did not feel my teeth were clean compared to using an electric toothbrush for a longer period of time.
Overall, the Y-Brush does take a bit of time to get used and you will need to master chewing on the bristles while moving the device around your mouth at the same time but it’s the end result that is disappointing you just need to spend more time flossing. This brings up the question of why replace your electric toothbrush with a device that is quicker but does not complete the task any better.
Verdict
The Benefit of using the Y-Brush is for those who have limited hand movement as it takes less dexterity than using an electric toothbrush.
Where this product could stand out is if you are on the move and wanted to freshen your mouth after a business lunch and you were in a hurry this portable device allows you to give your teeth a quick clean and in 15 seconds you could get minty fresh in no time.
Is this device any better compared to your electric toothbrush?
It’s a good idea to try and reduce the time taken to clean your teeth, especially for those with a busy life and always on the go. Unfortunately, the fact it does not clean your teeth fully means you need to spend more time using dental floss for longer so killing the benefit of speed with this device as you might as well just use your electric toothbrush. When you consider the cost of a Y-Brush at £115 and the range of premium electric toothbrushes packed with features on the market I feel for a deeper clean I will be sticking with my 2-minute electric toothbrush routine.
